Therapeutic Yoga for Diabetes

Diabetes is related to impaired glucose tolerance of the body where the insulin function is affected.

Common symptoms
1. Excessive thirst and hunger
2. Frequent urination
3. Tiredness
4. Burning sensation
5. Numbness

How yoga benefits Diabetes

1. Glucagon secretion is enhanced by stress and tension. Yoga has been proven to be effective against stress and tension which in turn controls the Glucagon secretion.
2. Diabetes is usually induced by obesity and hypertension. Yoga is effective in reducing unwanted weight and hypertension.
3. Yoga helps in enhancing insulin receptor on muscles which is enhanced by muscular relaxation and improved blood circulation thus reducing blood sugar.
4. Yoga postures tend to exercise the pancreas which heals it and improves its function.

Common Yoga postures for Diabetes

Asana or yoga posture with controlled breathing is good for any ailments especially degenerative and stress & life style related disorders. Asana or yoga posture begins by attaining a particular position followed by relaxation of muscle and controlled breathing. Physiologically, it is understood that certain postures with controlled breathing increases the blood circulation to related internal organs which in turn heals the organ. When the posture and breathing are practiced over a period of time it normalizes the organ’s physiological functions.

Some of the yoga practices recommended are

1. Surya Namaskar: This exercise (asana) increases the anti oxidant properties in the human body. It is effective in improving blood circulation and self-healing power of the body.
2. Hastapadasanchalan
3. Bhujangasana
4. Vajrasana
5. Sarvangasana

Breathing exercises

“Nadi suddhi pranayam” by alternate nostril breathing is effective against diabetes. This breathing exercise has a major impact on the body that in turn reduces stress or physiological factors related to diabetes. Other types of breathing exercises like “Bhramari” also show positive impact on reducing stress.

Meditation & Yoga Nidra
Yoga Nidra relieves stress and brings relaxation in the muscular and nervous system. Meditation has positive results with respect to insulin requirements and sugar levels.

Yogic detoxification and cleansing practices
Cleansing practices are recommended for diabetes. It is initiated by drinking salt water followed by yogic postures which cleanses or detoxifies the body.

Effect of Yoga practices in controlling Diabetes
Regular practice of yoga reduces stress and physical factors for diabetes which in turn normalizes and/or stabilizes the blood sugar levels and minimizes the complications of diabetes.

    Dr. Panda has appropriately stressed the role of mental stress in causing diabetes.Stress put on muscles in yogic postures stresses pancreas to secrete more insulin, hence controlling diabetes.Yoga also helps in stressing out tensions from our mind, stressing us lead a peaceful and pleasant life.It can’t be stressed more that yogic exercise offers more benefit in diabetes than other exercises.

    As you have both medical as well as yoga background, please explain me how shankhaprakshalana reduces blood sugar level instantly. I understand relaxation to pancreas but sudden fall in sugar level, I fail to understand the process. Will you please explain?

    In the recommended yoga practices,I have mentioned about ‘Hastapadasanchalan’ & not shankhaprakhalana.The process of reducing blood sugar by ‘Hastapadasanchalan’ is mentioned in my article as follows:
    “Yoga helps in enhancing insulin receptor on muscles which is enhanced by muscular relaxation and improved blood circulation thus reducing blood sugar.”

    ‘After review of literatures avilable related to Diabetes in medical science and yogic practices,I am to say that shankhaprakshalana means cleansing gastrointestinal system by intake of salt water in empty stomach.
    The factors responsible for reduction in blood sugar as a result of shankhaprakshalana are:
    1. Due to non intake of any food before the practice,the blood sugar level is as such on lower side.
    2. Fasting with salt water intake slows down the process of glycogenesis.
    3. Excess sodium ion concentration in salt water inhibits significant amount of glucose reuptake at nephrons in kidney.

    I have gone through chapter on diabetes in book of endocrinology.

    Exercise has a definite and detailed effect on blood sugar. One of the effect is;larger and longer the muscle is used, more is effect. Second reason in Yoga is that unusual muscles:not commonly used ones, larger muscle involved will have more effect. It is basically exercise in any form.

    Wikipedia on exercise and blood sugar will also give lot of information.
    Review of existing established literature on the subject should be basis for further update.

    I would like to view that as diabetes is an epidemic to victimize Indian population, your timely published clip is highly beneficial who’re adhered to life style maintenance.Diabetes is not a disease entity but a metabolic disorder.Hence if one remains strict to diet and adopt yogic life style, the diabetes will not touch him.
