Arati of Shirdi Sai in Dham, Mandir and Ashrams

Shri Satchidananda Sadguru Sainath Maharaj Ki Jaya.
In the epilogue of ‘Shri Sai Satcharita’ by N.V.Gunaji, it is said:
“Oh Sai Baba; we wave lights before you, the bestower of happiness to the Jivas.
Give us;Your servants and devotees rest under the dust of your feet, burning desires.
You remain absorbed in Your Self; and show the God to the aspirants.”
On October 14, 2008 while attending the evening arati in Sai Dham, Sohna Road Gurgaon Haryana (N.C.R. Delhi) in the assembly of devotees enjoying the Sai nam &bhajan, I took the Sankalpa to accept the discipleship of Sadguru Sai Baba. After the arati was over; I gave my Guru Dakhina and became Sai Baba devotee. This fact I have mentioned in my first article ‘How I became Sai Baba devotee’. On October 12, 2009 I reaffirmed my patience and faith in my Spiritual Guru and made it a part of my daily life to attend noon arati in Shri Shirdi Sai Baba Anand Ashram, BTM Lay out Bangalore. I have mentioned this in my subsequent article ‘Aloneness in Yoga and Spirituality’. I had the privilege to attend evening arati in Sai Mandir, Tankpani Road Bhubaneswar on July 17, 2010 and in Hatapada Bargarh on July 19, 2010 during my vacation trip to Orissa.
In Sai Dham Sohna Road Gurgaon, Sai Baba is worshiped amidst Gods like Shiva, Parvati, Ganesh and Ram, Krishna, Hanuman. The arati of Sai Baba is done after it is offered to Gods in the Dham.In Sai Mandirs in Orissa, Sai Baba is worshiped as God. Sai Baba is accepted as an incarnation of Lord Jagannath by his devotees in Orissa. In Sai Baba Anand Ashram BTM Lay out Bangalore, Sai Baba is worshiped as a Guru in calm and cool environment by the acharyas and devotees. The symbol of Om (Hinduism), crescent moon and star (Islam) and cross (Christianity) displayed on the beam joining the worship place of Sai Baba and the prayer hall for the devotees symbolises unity of religions. In the centre of worship place Sai Baba is seated on a rectangular stone in Fakir dress garlanded with flowers. The Gurusthan is located a few meters away from worship place of Sai under a Neem tree in the Ashram campus where Lord Dattatreya, Lord Vinayaka and Lord Subramanya are worshiped.
I have felt; attending arati and devoting time in recitation of prayer to Sadguru Sai Baba has strengthened my spiritual vision, thought and action in Sai Spirituality.

  1. As far I have understood religion and spirituality, it is the belief system of our brain, which is important.

It is the faith in some supernatural power, which gives us peace as we can depend on some power to help us out of our problems and satisfy our desires.

Different cultures, circumstances and environments necessitated different stories, heroes and gods to generate examples of widespread service, administration, law and order improvements or some thought process, which in later times came to be regarded as universal truth, power, wisdom, glory or God.

All requirements of this universal population of human beings can not be satisfied by a few examples of gods or thoughts. Basic truths are same in all stories, religions, countries and cultures. Variations stem from the stories of actual life happenings of a particular character. The stories and memories of these unusual persons, when mixed with thinking of public and their spiritual faiths turn out in various forms to be recognized as a new God.

Ultimately it is this faith which drives us from selfish motives to service above self. It is the emotional bonding or affection of mother, which drives her to do all service to her infant, which no other person in this world can duplicate. Similarly only a spiritually motivated person can rise above selfish interests and do service for service sake. It is here that teachings of Gita become relevant.

Different problems were solved by different persons in their unique way. These turned out to be gods in their sphere of problem to set an example for the people to follow. The stories and examples related to that god are the foundations of peace and relaxation in his followers` mind. A central or universal answer to all requirements of past, present and future is the God Almighty. Hence we should have faith; since faith is central to all benefits that will flow to us. This faith is the root of all positive drive, that is sustaining this earth.

The Article ” Arati of Shirdi Sai in Dham, Mandir and Ashrams” in ‘Yoga and Spirituality’ conceptually cleared me the differences of Arati in different places of worship of Shirdi Sai .

In my recent trip to Mumbai to attend a five days workshop at Hotel Taj Lands, I got an opportunity to visit Shirdi and also to attend the Kakad Arati in early morning at 4.30 AM on 16th August 2010. We , i.e. myself, my colleagues Dr.Jyotsna Mohapatra and Mr.P.N.Rao, were in the Queue line from mid night 12AM to morning 4.30AM to attend the Kakad Arati. It’s really an unforgetable moment and to get hearty peace for all of us.

By the by, we also saw and knew many unknown things about Shirdi Sai Baba in the Temple premises and Shirdi Sai Museum, where we got an opportunity to see the Dress, Cloths weared, the Utensils used by Baba and the persons who were always with Baba in his life time and like wise many more.

During this trip we threee colleagues also got an opportunity to visit 2 important Jyotirlingas ( Bhima Shankar and Triambekeshwar) among Dwadash Jyotirlingas of India.

    • There are four major arati viz. Kakad arati ( morning arati ), Madhyana arati ( noon arati ), Dhupa arati ( evening arati ) & Sheja arati (night arati) offered to Shirdi Sai Baba out of which the Madhyana arati ( noon arati ) is most suitable for me to attend as Senior citizen and Hindu devotee.

    Dear all,
Today being Thursday, we all consider as an auspicious day. But in reality every day is an auspicious day, it is all the love we show towards the Lord, as soon as it is Thursday, we feel very happy thinking it is Sai`s day, our beloved mother`s day, seeing our love, Sai feels very happy in turn. Let us try to imagine everyday as Thursday and be happy for the rest of our life.

  6. Dr.Binod Bihari Naik says:

    Respected Sir,

I don`t know much about the significance and important of Arati; but however the kindling of light in auspicious occasion or at the end of puja is called arati. Light dispels the darkness so also intellect ignites mind`s light and body is enlightened by showing the arati. So arati is a positive action by which a devotee gets absorbed to whom he is worshiping and creates environment of attention of all assembled around the deity. Hence all gatherings happen to show as one unit, is it not vasudevan vahu kutumekam. Faith works a lot and many have got their achievement in life. So also arati had been done as usual in Shirdi Sai dham, mandhir and ashram. But something is different here, because four time arati such as kakad , noon ,evening and shez are offered to shrine of Sai Baba so auspiciously that the queues of devotees itself imparts self-satisfaction and inspiration to make the queues again and again .I vehemently appeal if one defies it can desire to debar. Hence obey as child is the answer of the facts of power, position of status of spirituality. This is significance of arati performed at transition periods of a day to get world`s peace.

    With Regards,
    Your Divine Brother

  7. It has been six years as on October 14, 2014 since I have been attending arati of Shri Sai Baba in Dham, Mandir and Ashrams beginning on October 14, 2008. The devotional worship with lighting candle wicks is called arati. Light dispels the darkness so also intellect ignites mind`s light and body is enlightened by the light of arati. So arati is a positive action by which a devotee gets absorbed to whom he is worshiping and creates spiritual environment for all assembled devotees.
