Subjective and Objective Inference in Science and Spirituality

It is technology that brings science to our doorstep. Technology is the external face, the outward expression of science. Likewise, religions are outward expression of spirituality. They have evolved over time and each religion has its own constituency of followers. Like science, the goal of spirituality is to help efface our problems and improve the quality of our lives. While science broadly deals with problems one by one and that which are external in nature ; spirituality seeks to strike at the root of all problems that is embedded in our ignorance of the true purpose of life and inability to recognize the true self.

While applying science to our lives we perform various rituals without questioning how it works because the ‘how’ has already been taken care of those who formalized it. The rituals go hand in hand whenever technology based appliances are in use. A religion too, prescribes rituals which are to be viewed in the light of above. A religion adapts spirituality and enlists some easy steps for consumption and benefit of the people. If you are inclined to study and learn about science;you have to understand  the  theories and formulas how things work. You ought to have the commitment, drive and a sense of  adventure to explore and discover truths. You could similarly pursue spirituality. It is irrational to reject or run down any ritual because we have not understood it. Every ritual has been evolved with a great deal of thought and experience in order to enhance physical and mental well-being that will contribute towards spiritual uplift. Religious rituals are usually purification exercises designed to propel one towards refinement.

While science aims to enhance the comfort of human life; spirituality teaches us how to be comfortable with what we have.

  1. Vinod Varma says:

Science, religion and spirituality are talked about in a very casual manner by all and sundry without adequate effort in appreciating any of them.

Each of them is a vast ocean; and it takes a lifetime to appreciate even one of them, leave alone mastering.

In the midst of cacophony of self-made masters of science, spirituality and religion; it is refreshing to see your write up that clarifies roles and relations of science, technology, spirituality and religion.

  2. Rightly and nicely elaborated article.

Science deals with things in a specific manner.

Religion and spirituality are to some extent science in that sense.

Religion organizes people in a particular way designed by its creators for a specific purpose and need in mind;at the time of its onset. The practices keep on changing over the time keeping the changes in the society.

Spirituality is individual specific and depends on the personality of a person.

All three need to work properly and interact with each other in a positive way for overall benefit of the society.

These are three broad groups in which we categorize the events, record and then pursue the changes.

Ultimate aim is to live a useful and happy life; the preferences and capacities are individual.

  3. Prakash Padhan says:

    After reading your article;
I feel Science and Spirituality are two sides of a single coin.
Science gives comfort life where as Spirituality gives quality life.
Science of spirituality lies in rituals;which we may not know.

  4. Chandra Kumar Panda says:

    Sir,
    Namaskar.
I read the article where you have magnificently differentiated the values of Science & Spirituality.

    Sir,
We the Indians are God fearing people;whatever we do ,we rely on the mercy of the Almighty what ever the result may be after it; whether be it good or be it bad; whereas the Western people are very pragmatic in nature and they rely on the effect of science & technology. No doubt, both the science & technology in one hand & the power of spirituality on the other have its own role. But it can not be denied that the Supreme Power of the Almighty is over &above all the creations.

  5. Dr.Binod Bihari Naik says:

    Respected Sir,

With reference to your topic `Subjective & Objective inference in Science & Spirituality’ first I thought how my micro-mind will congregate and micronize to elaborate the magnus theme. Still I didn`t despair and lose hope and expectation; and stride a lot to shape the topic simpler so as to make a sincere effort for a blind to see, a dumb to express, and a deaf to grasp its real meaning.

Spirituality & Science are co-brothers like Ram & Laxman; and co-sisters like Laxmi &Saraswati of Majestic Epic of Tetra & Dwaper Yuga. History evinced that they are separated means devastation and united means prosperity. I opine same result between the co-friends Science & Spirituality in modern era. I pause here with a Dictum:God the makers of man is Spirituality and Man makers of material enigma is Science.Observe, analyze and understand the cordiality between Science & Spirituality.Observe a tree and learn its stamina of mystery, analyze how it sucks water and mineral from earth by root;and engulfs air, light and cosmic energy(ether) by leaves and renders selfless service to humanity; and thereby understand what is Science & Spirituality.

O Man! you are not a greater scientist than a tree though hailed from same source God. Hence seal your desire, curtail ego and utilise science for spirituality.

    Thanking You,
    Your divine brother

  8. The origin of every kind of scientific exploration is invariably a hypothesis. Subsequently, if the hypothesis is proved through evidence, observation and inference, it is claimed as a law of Nature. Initially, I took ‘I am pure awareness ‘ as a hypothesis. I found evidence, made observation and inferred that I was pure awareness. To me then ‘I am pure awareness ‘ is a law. This can’t be proved to others. Every one must prove it to oneself. 🙂

    • Although I now know myself as pure awareness, I still need to experience myself as such. For that, I need to find a surface to fall on, which would reflect my essential nature, if not in an absolutely pure form, at least in its alloyed form. I find that surface in my breath and in my thought.

      • I,as Awareness, know that there are millions of thoughts embedded in the psyche. I also know that the moment I fall upon any of these, it (the thought proper) gets inflamed. It gets charged with tremendous life force and dynamism. It gets specially empowered. The more focussed and continuous my fall, the more charged it gets. If it is a sex-related thought, tremendous libido is released. If it is a vengeance -related thought, fierce anger is released. If it is a service-related thought, deep kindness is released. So, I am the one to choose which thoughts to invest with my innate light, power and dynamism 🙂

  9. Purnima Panda says:

    Pranam kaka,

In the article it is well defined, elaborated and differentiated between science and spirituality. Both have its own meaning, science relates us the technology the quality view of life whereas spirituality relates the soul to the extreme power which teaches the aim of life and how to live life in a better manner. Thank you kaka for magnificent definition and comparison of both.

  10. V Chandra Sekhar says:

    Namaste Pandaji,

Your article about the subtle nuances & difference between the two is very thought-provoking. My inference of this is:- Spirituality is at a slightly higher pedestal, as it helps one to derive satisfaction with what one has, whereas science exhorts one to aspire for enhancement of one’s comforts in life, which are not absolutely necessary since one can still manage to exist with whatever minimal comforts are available.
