Turning Water into Oil-Lighting Lamps-A Glimpse of Wonderful Life of Shirdi Sai Baba

As described in Chapter V of Shri Sai Satcharita, “Sai Baba was very fond of lights. He used to borrow oil from shopkeepers, and keep lamps burning the whole night in the Masjid and temple. The Banias, who supplied oil gratis, once met together and decided not to give Him oil. When, as usual, Baba went to ask for oil, they all gave Him a distinct ‘No’. Unperturbed, Baba returned to the Masjid and kept the dry wicks in the lamps. The Banias were watching Him with curiosity. Baba took the Tumrel (tin pot), which contained very little (a few drops) oil, put water into it and drank it, and then, forced it out to fall into the container. After consecrating the tin-pot in this way, He again took the water from the tin-pot and filled all the lamps with it and lighted them. To the surprise and dismay of the watching Banias, the lamps began to burn and kept burning the whole night. The Banias repented and apologized and Baba forgave them, and asked them to be more truthful in future.”

  3. Blessings from God are available to those who see Him anywhere, including stone sculpture.Faith is basic source of blessings.I believe the story to be true, as nothing is impossible for God Almighty.

God is what our mind believes to be as God.If we read the story with critical mind we will distance ourselves from God as logic and God does not exist together.

  4. May Baba bless each and everybody to be enlightened towards truth and may empower us to decrease dishonesty.

  6. Non-availability of oil was not an obstacle for Shri Sai Baba.He was self-illuminated.

Now-a-days Diwali is being celebrated in an entertainment way.It has no meaning to spend thousand of rupees for crackers where abject poverty is prevalent.Self-ignition with divine light may show the path of GOD.

Sir, today I had the chance to go through your article and found to be very attracting & heart-touching. All the leela of Sri Sai itself is very much amazing and divine. So far the lighting of lamp by Sri Sai is concerned, indeed He was very fond of lighting the lamp. One of the miracles is that once when the Banias did not offer Him oil (free of cost) He converted the water into oil and continued His lighting throughout the night…of course it is one among different miracles of Sri Sai.

Whatever that may be your article is reminding us towards the devotional action of Sri Sai and we are remaining in continuous touch in this regard. May Sri Sai keep all happy and peaceful in the worldy mortal life and men in rank and file be submissive at His feet.

    Yours Sincerely
    Chandra Kumar Panda

    Om Sai Ram

Let us also remember Sai`s control over elements, like how Sai once ordered fire to calm down, how He orders the wind to blow calmly, how He orders the roof of the Dwarakamaayi to stop falling down till they complete their lunch, how Sai cured snake bite by ordering the poison to go away, how our Sai checked the plague by grinding the wheat and spreading them on the outskirts of the village.

His leelas are abundant; enjoy the Amrith, the Ambrosia!
