Yoga in the West

Yoga has now become a very popular activity in the west for last few decades. Modern Yoga gained momentum in the west during 19th Century CE after Swami Vivekananda travelled to west and came in contact of the people of the western world. With time several yoga masters went to west from India and brought popularity to this discipline in the west. The Yoga was formally introduced in the west through translated versions from Sanskrit to English. The Hatha Yoga became the most popular form of Yoga in West based on basic features of yogasana and pranayama. Gradually the Patanjali`s yoga sutras of Ashtanga Yoga or Raja Yoga gained acceptance.

Way back in March 2010, when I started writing article on Yoga posted in Yoga Website basing on my knowledge and practice as a Yoga Practitioner; hardly had I known that Yoga is as popular in the West as in the East. In course of time spanning almost 2 years, I had published a good number of articles on Hatha Yoga and Raja Yoga. Frankly speaking, I was convinced about popularity of Yoga in the West, when Yoga Practitioners of the Western Countries took great interest in reading the posts published in my blog Yoga and Spirituality through World Wide Web and posted their comments on my articles on yoga. It is a great pleasure on my part to observe that the articles ‘Yoga for Arthritis of Elderly persons’ in Hatha Yoga and ‘Yama and Niyama in Yoga’ in Raja Yoga have earned so much popularity in the West that those articles are frequently viewed by the readers of various Western Countries in the translated versions from English to their national language.

Now I can personally understand, Yoga has got Universal and International recognition.

Values and practices (which includes Yoga) evolved in India transcend geographical and political barriers, and helps entire human race.

I agree that yoga is popular in western countries also. My observation is that, it is often we who do not realize their importance richness of our heritage as many other people in western countries do. What we should truly need is to blend the best of science and spirituality with rich heritage and culture. We need to blend materialistic success with spiritual progress.

With your knowledge and experience, I hope your effort will continue to light the way in this direction.

Yoga is also a branch of science by practice of which all the diseases are cured, particularly you have a better idea about this. As recently Swami Ramdevjee Baba experimented about this and by which he is famous all over the world.Sir, the history of world recognises the Indian culture from which they abstract the knowledge. If we do research strongly about our culture we must get the truth.

  7. Dr.Binod Bihari Naik says:

Since inception of human civilisation people of east deals with spirituality and applies the science; but it is adverse that people of west believed science and applied it, but denied spirituality because of their ignorance and arrogance. On passing of time when the world is starting contracting for globalisation of unity of one home and knowledge of spirituality is opened and evidenced to westerners by the genius of eastern great souls particularly Indian origin; their eyes opened and they realised the effect of Yoga and Spirituality particularly Hatha Yoga for maintaining of body and Raja Yoga for tranquillity of mind and last, but not the least, Bhakti Yoga which transcends the body and mind and feel the soul, bliss that is ecstasy–means realisation of self with universal self called a global family.

One can imagine effect of easterners which motivates and transforms westerners for becoming human beings from human creatures by adhering to Satya, Dharma, Shanti, Prema and Ahimsa.

    Thanking you for your efforts,
    With regards

    Om Sri Sainathaya Namah

I am quite happy to know that your article on Yoga & Spirituality is becoming more and more heart touching and gaining popularity both in national as well as international level with increase in number of readers.

I think it is the mercy and blessings of Sri Sai before whom you yourself have surrendered. When Hemadpant decided to start the writing of Satcharita of Sri Sai, he first of all sought the blessings of Sri Sai by which it could be a successful one. Whatever that may be,regarding Yoga what you have illustrated in your article is definitely beneficial to mankind for those who can devote for the purpose with sincere practice and meditation.

East and West are exchanging their views and taking many decisions in many fields of development and the Yoga is not an exception to it. The importance is that your article on ‘Yoga for Arthritis of Elderly persons’in Hatha Yoga and ‘Yama and Niyama in Yoga’in Raja Yoga has accelerated the grasping mind of many Westerners.

May God bless you to spread your fame far & wide.
    Yours Sincerely,
    Chandra Kumar Panda

As it is clear from your article that Yoga practice is not limited within India. Western world is also showing interest towards the yogic culture. Definitely Yoga has got the universal acceptance.

    Thanking you
