Seemollanghan by Shirdi Sai Baba

As described in Chapter 42 of Shri Sai Satcharita, Sai Baba left His mortal coil on the day of Dasara dated 15th October 1918. Two years before this, i.e. in 1916, Baba gave an indication of His passing away, but nobody understood it then. It was as follows:

On the Vijayadashami (Dasara) day, Baba, all of a sudden got into wild rage in the evening, when people were returning from ‘Seemollanghan’ (crossing the border or limits of the village). Taking off His head-dress, kafni and langota etc. He tore them and threw them in the dhuni before Him. On being fed this offering, the fire in the dhuni began to burn brighter and Baba shone still brighter. He stood there stark naked and with His burning red eyes shouted, “You fellows, now have a look and decide finally, whether I am a Muslim or a Hindu.” Everybody was trembling with fear, and none dared to approach Baba. After some time Bhagoji Shinde, the leper devotee of Baba, went boldly near Him and succeeded in tying a Langota (waist-band ) round His waist and said, “Baba, what is all this ? Today is the ‘Seemollanghan’, i.e., Dasara Holiday.” Baba striking the ground with His Satka said, “This is my ‘Seemollanghan’ (crossing the border).” Baba did not cool down till 11-00 p.m., and the people doubted, whether the Chavadi procession would ever take place that night. After an hour Baba resumed His normal condition, and dressing Himself as usual, attended the Chavadi procession as described before. By this incident Baba gave a suggestion that, Dasara was the proper time for Him to cross the border of life, but none understood its meaning then.

    Vairaagyasamrajyada Poojanaabhyam, Namonamah Sree Gurupadukabyaam.

I pay my tribute and respect at the feat of Guru whose generosity helps me cross the endless ocean of life (like a boat) and fills me with devotion to Guru, and whose worship helps me reach the world free of desires (and its consequences).

  3. God is great.
So are His virtues, actions and words.

Layman never understands implication/indication of great man.

Thank you for your post, I knew more about Saibaba.

    Om Shri Sai Nathaya Namah

The article implies on the departure of life from the humanlike body of Sri Sai. Indeed it is not the final departure rather leaving the body by Sri Sai who was in existence for the guidance and welfare of humanity. After leaving the human body, once he told that “I am alive and my samadhi will be always speaking and helping to those devotees who surrender to me”.

During His earthly existence, a number of leelas were visible among which the “This is my Seemollanghan” was one of the prominent. Usually in many a occasion He was found to be angered upon with red eyes in anger, striking the satka on ground etc. and all these activities were to teach lessons to His devotees without having any other intention. But the layman could not understand that mystery on the circumstances where Baba expressed such things. Only few of His ardent devotees were able to know it to certain extent. So how can the layman understand the irony on the version of “This is my Seemollanghan” from Sri Sai.Indeed it is only the spiritual people know what they do for others and others can only feel the miraculous benefit.

    Yours Sincerely

Kafni was Sai`s golden dress, the dilapidated masjid was his kingdom, dhuni`s udi was his money, the head cloth was his crown. Beggars were his darbar`s people, the brick was his pillow, the gunny bag was his golden bed, the tin box and mud pots were his golden utensils, the stone in front of the masjid was his throne.

    He is the Samarth Maharaj.
Wow maharaj, you are undescribable, your ways are awesome 🙂

  7. M. S. Bhagwat says:

Dasara or Vijayadashami is regarded by all the Hindus as the most auspicious time and it is befitting that Baba would have chosen this time for His crossing the border-line.

Saints embody themselves and come into this world with a definite mission and after the motto of the mission is fulfilled they pass away as quietly and easily as they came.

    Dear Sir,
It’s Very Nice Article, Make me and many more aware to know more about Saibaba and Seemollanghan.

In my recent visit to Shirdi dham with Family and Friends stayed 4days at Shirdi from 6th to 9th June 2012 and got an opportunity of Baba’s Samadhi Mandir Darshan 3 times – Morning Darshan, Mukha Darshan and Kakad Arati along with Dwarakamai, Chaudi and Museum. All of us felt very peace during and after darshan and the weather at Shirdi and surroundings also very pleasant with Beautiful Grape, Pomegranate, Sapota and Mango Plantation.

We have also got an opportunity to get Baba’s Anna Prasad – Lunch and also visited Shani Snganapur, Triambhakeswar, Grushaneswar Jyotirlingas, Bhaktidham, Mukhtidham, Panchavati, Mini Taj Mahal and Ellora Caves in Maharashtra and Srisaila Bramarambika Mallikarjun and Yadagiri Laxmi Narasimha Temple near to Hyderabad in A.P.

  9. Dr.Binod Bihari Naik says:

Sai Baba asserted with firm confidence & assurance to the thronged devotees that he didn’t belong to them. He hailed here on his own wish to correct them & to show the beacon of light for discovery of ‘Self’. Further he exhorted unnecessary brooding & feeling of religion is an enigma & man-made.

That scene of Seemollanghan blazed by Baba wasn’t an exhibition rather a miraculous thunder & lightening to amaze all & made remembrance again & again that one shouldn’t be attached to body & mind and always be conscious to become one which is the price of ‘Human Birth’.

His dictum as follows is eternal ‘Allah Malik’
Be adhered to Shraddha & Saburi.

    With Thanks,
    Yours Divine Brother
