Meditative Dynamism in Karma Yoga

Through karma yoga one gets detached to the fruit of action and develops the attitude towards selfless service. Karma Yoga says: Work for work`s sake and the work itself is its reward. Meditative dynamism is active meditational state of one`s physical, mental and intellectual functions in an uninterrupted concentration.

In meditative dynamism one works the work in hand with much physical, mental and intellectual vigour and enthusiasm. In meditative state one can explore the super conscious realms to access the store house of knowledge, wisdom and energy within. Once he begins to experience the action as an inner flow of meditative dynamism, he can realize that the work he does on the outside is but a reflection of the work on the inside and feel the essence of meditative dynamism in karma yoga.

When the karma or action is done in meditative dynamism we realize that we are not the doer of our actions, for everything is going on around us automatically via the laws of karma, cause and effect. One can develop active meditational state in visualising, listening, reading and writing by regularly performing meditation in day-to-day yoga practice.

  1. I have referred the chapter ‘Moving Meditation in Yoga’ of the book ‘Sure Ways to Self-Realization’ authored by Swami Satyananda Saraswati published by Bihar School of Yoga, Munger Bihar India in drafting the article ‘Meditative Dynamism in Karma Yoga’.

  2. Vinod Varma says:

As you have rightly pointed out, Karma Yoga is about being in the thick of action yet being detached from it…It comes from the realization that self is not affected (nainam chindati sastraani nainam dahati pavakah nachainam kledayantaapo nasoshayati marutah).

  3. Prakash Padhan says:

Thank you sir for sharing useful article.

In each and every moment we are engaged in karma.Meditation itself is a Karma. But Karma should be satkarma. Bhagbat Gita says-“I am not the doer”. Everything happens by the direction of God.I think essence of Karma-Yoga is work without attachment.

    Odia Bhagabata says-
    Kari karau thaen muhin
    Mo binu anyagati nahin

    Odia poet Gopabandhu Das says-
    Manaba Jivana nuhai kebala barsha,maasa,dina,danda;
Karme jiyen nara karma eka tara jivanara manadanda.

  4. Well said Dr.Panda!

Meditation is a type of mental focus and concentration. Same is required if we do any work with focus and concentration. Hence all work done sincerely can be grouped under meditation. But practically working sincerely involves different type of mental and/or physical functions while meditation is essentially a mental exercise to correct thought processes.

Aim in meditation is to learn and practice relieving the mental ill effects of daily schedule, generate peace in mind, develop faith in God to have a mental mechanism of shedding tension by submitting fully to God, rejuvenate emotionally and to refresh oneself daily. Working on other hand may not always be peaceful though one has to learn to be always in meditative state of mind even while working.

  5. Dr.Binod Bihari Naik says:

    Respected Sir,

Meditation means to still the body & mind; and when it has been pointing towards atma either consciously or subconsciously in action is called Meditative Dynamism in Karma Yoga. It is so easy and simple that one of any age can do practice. No bar of caste, creed, religion, sex is confined to this procedure. Hence by practicing meditative dynamism one alone or group drenched into ecstasy can enjoy blissful life contrary to other form of Yoga. As such it simulates to bhakti yoga having nine wings(srabana, swarana, kirtana ,padasebana, archhana, bandana, dasya rupa, sakha rupa ,atma nibedana). More over it can maintain cordiality of Head(wisdom), Heart(devotion) and Hands(work for selfless service).

I would not like to highlight much; rather I don`t hesitate to impress on younger mass of modern era to adopt meditation and get free from Maya(illusion).

Today to relate to your topic my dictum to modern people:
    O Man! Observe two things-
1:-Elimination of the animal traits still clinging to man
    2:-Unification of the Divine
This is a self-procedure of Salvation by Meditative Dynamism.

    Thanking you,
    Your Divine Brother

    Respected Sir,

A nice article which shows the reality of human life. As your lesson describes, the Karma (Duty) is the important part of the human being. Without karma a man is unable to enjoy his life; in other words, he can not enjoy the real beauty of his life.

Sometimes we see some beggars of young age. Is it their karma? There are some Mao-activists in different parts of the country. Is it their karma ? and sir the people engaged in different illegal works in different fields are doing their karma; How can they realize it is their karma? Lastly some doubt about this, though they maintain their family through this work; can we say it is their Karma or if not why?; particularly such type of people also meditate for their work. Sir, What is your comment about such type of people ? What are the remedies to bring back them to main stream ?

    • Dear Kedar,
Basic of all human functions is Action or Karma.

What you have described about the karma of beggars,Mao-activists and other illegal works is ‘Vikarma’ which is action that is prohibited. The law of karma applies to everyone, but one can transcend it through meditation. The law of karma exists and yet can be transcended by realisation and the power of spirituality.

  7. Nageswara Rao says:

    Dear Sir,

Well Mentioned and Nicely Elaborated Article on Meditative Dynamism in Karma Yoga.”Without Karma one can’t get any result; We have to do our duties as well performers with regular and continuous practice of Meditation in Karma Yoga. Definitely we can get fruits without waiting for them when the time comes and no one can stop that”.

Is there any difference between Dynamism and Meditation?; I think Dhyana or Dhyanam in Indian Languages might be equivalent to Meditation in English.

Thanking You for sharing a Nice Article.
    With Regards,

    • Dear Mr.Nageswar,

According to Wikipedia, the meaning of ‘Dynamism’ is ‘The activeness of an energetic personality’.You are absolutely correct; ‘Dhyana or Dhyanam’ in Indian Languages is equivalent to ‘Meditation’ in English.
