Greatness of Spiritual, Intellectual and Physical Virtues in Helping Others

In Karma-Yoga content in ‘The Secret of Work’ chapter of the book ‘The Complete Works of Swami Vivekananda’ (Vol.I) based on his lectures and writings it is described that “Helping others physically by removing their physical needs, is indeed great, but the help is great according as the need is greater and according as the help is far-reaching. If a man`s wants can be removed for an hour, it is helping him indeed; if his wants can be removed for a year, it will be more help to him; but if his wants can be removed for ever, it is surely the greatest help that can be given to him.

Spiritual knowledge is the only thing that can destroy our miseries for ever; any other knowledge satisfies wants only for a time. Next to spiritual comes intellectual help. The gift of knowledge is a far higher gift than that of food and clothes; it is even higher than giving life to a man, because the real life of man consists of knowledge. Next in order comes, of course, helping a man physically.

The miseries of the world cannot be cured by physical help only. Until man`s nature changes, these physical needs will always arise, and miseries will always be felt, and no amount of physical help will cure them completely. The only solution of this problem is to make mankind pure. Let men have light, let them be pure and spiritually strong and educated, and then alone will misery cease in the world, not before.”

  1. Vinod Varma says:

Yes, indeed, one needs to transform oneself in all three planes, that is, physical, intellectual and spiritual… one cannot be replaced by another… while physical transformation is hard, intellectual is harder and spiritual is hardest. … one needs help of a true Guru for spiritual growth.

  2. Prakash Padhan says:

Swami Vivekananda also says-‘Preaching Religion is meaningless to a hungry person’. This indicates physical needs “Roti, Kapda, Makan” is badly necessary. As our body is physical, physical help/need is as like as spiritual.

  3. Help is help, howsoever it is. Helping others is great and a good virtue. Need based help and capacity of helper being limiting factors, are other considerations defining significance of help. Spiritual awakening and knowledge are definitely better then help in kind. Spiritual awakening and knowledge are functions of recipients’ brain which may work or may not. Best part is that person should have a helping attitude, mode of which can be best only depending on factors of both helper and recipient. Factors of help and their significance is an unending philosophy and can be discussed in volumes. Head of a country framing and implementing proper policies, doing one’s duty properly, direct and indirect help are some of the factors which extend the scope of word help. Changing attitude of a person spiritually towards life so that his needs are limited to reality and redefining needs of a person, are some of the ways to help people. Service above self is best motto in this regard.

    Respected Sir,

Society means sharing of each individual in all aspects as per need in day to day life and when emphasis is given on Yoga & Spirituality, then definitely a healthy society is emerged out. So there is no question of conflicts or differences of caste, creed, cult, nation & religion; then either sex feels save and starts surrendering to God. Everybody feels life is love; love is God and lives in love. But a great task is imposing here to every individual to complete and compile his own text. How will it be carried out? No botheration: a simple way that is how to realize self or would be explained, appealed and convinced by a preceptor ( Guru ) that Atomic life in Cosmic field is just like an earthen pot with water on sea surface or dancing water bubbles over the sea surface. Every visible comes from invisible and again mingles with invisible as per tuning of God`s grace except deviation shown by human being due to intellect a component of his own; that courses mind to body in such a way where obedient atma bounds to remain silence observer. To get rid from those clutches one should realize: life is love, share it and enjoy it; life is a dream, make real it; life is a drama, play it; life is a challenge, meet it; at last but not the least life faces devil, fight and finish it to end. Take life as a simple game and each day start with love, spend with love and end with love and at last take deep breath to have nice sleep for next day to start or Samadhi for enlighten soul for next birth or salvation. This is the divine life cycle reflected in your article ‘Greatness of Spiritual, Intellectual and Physical Virtues in Helping Others’.

    Thanking you,
    Your Divine Brother
