Yoga and Onion in Sai Spirituality

As described in Chapter XXIII of Shri Sai Satcharita, “Once it so happened that, a Sadhak of Yoga came to Shirdi with Nanasaheb Chandorkar. He had studied all works on Yoga, including the Yoga-sutras of Patanjali, but had no practical experience. He could not concentrate his mind and attain Samadhi even for a short time. He thought that if Sai Baba will be pleased with him, He will show him, the way to attain Samadhi, for a longer time. With this object in view, he came to Shirdi and when he went to the Masjid he saw Sai Baba eating chapatti with onion. On seeing this, a thought crossed his mind: ‘How can this man, eating stale bread with raw onion, solve my difficulties and help me?’ Sai Baba read his mind and said to Nanasaheb, “Oh Nana, he, who has the power to digest onion, should eat it and none else,” Hearing this remark, the yogi was wonder-struck and, he fell at Baba`s Feet with complete surrender. With pure and open mind, he related his difficulties and got their solution from Baba. Thus, being satisfied and happy, he left Shirdi with Baba`s Udi and blessings”.

reminds me of verses from thotakashtakam, composed by thotakaacharya (disciple of Adi Sankaracharya)

vidithaa na mayaa visadaika kalaa na cha kinjchana kAnjchanamasthi guro
druthameva videhi kripaam sahajaam bhava sankara desika me saranam

which roughly translates to mean ‘oh guru, no art is fully known by me. I do not have even a piece of gold. I surrender to you. Please show your natural mercy on me.’

There are no limits of Gurukaruna (mercy of Guru).

  4. There is difference in Astha and Andh-Viswas. Astha is faith or opinion of person while Andh-Viswas is blind faith. Having blind faith is like playing blind in gambling, it may turn out to be wrong or right. But this is clear only when cards are displayed or truth comes out. Similarly Teaching strength of teacher is unfolded only after taking lessons from him and not from the impressions of first look. Teacher in Sai Baba could see the doubt in mind of disciple and could demonstrate his teaching strength by providing him the answer. Doubts need to be clarified to convert Andh-Viswas to Astha.

  8. Prakash Padhan says:

Only Sai Baba has such spiritual power to read the inner feelings of disciples. It’s a miracle. Initially many people were thinking that Baba was an ordinary “Fakir”(beggar), but people realised their mistake like Nanasaheb. Complete surrender is necessary to obtain Gurukrupa. Nice learning.

  9. Dr.Binod Bihari Naik says:

    Respected Sir,

Yoga and Onion in Sai Spirituality is a remarkable message. One who delves deep into it, is able to click his or her own significance and gets at least a window to jump into the field of self-realization. Really it is a humorous act of Sai Baba to ordinary man but very amazing to sage accompanying with Chandorkar for salvation. Because Sai Baba appeared to sage being exponent with Patanjali Yoga, he is not restricted to sattwic food rather indulged to tamasic food. There is a proverb, “as your food so your mind”. But is it applicable to Sai Baba? Never. He is the incarnation and to transcend every act to sow seeds of human value to reap the fruit of divinity in derailed man. But though the sage envisioned Sai Baba as Fakir with chapatti and onion in course of conversation his locked intellect was instantaneously opened by Baba`s divine fervour. He himself curtailed his ego, his mind automatically subdued, intellect illuminated and body bowed down on the lotus feet of Sai Baba and attended Samadhi. This is called total Surrender; a clarion call. Hence one who is graduated and comes closure to Avatar is instanteously blessed but indifferent in case of common man.

When this question was asked to Sai Baba of Puttaparthi, He vehemently answered yes, yes, yes- a great meaning; that is Sadhana. Don`t worry, very simple. Follow Satsanga and Bhajan surely win self-realization.Moreover Shree Satya Sai in his life time exhorted and imparted always EHV (Education in Human Value) as follows: Come to Puttaparthi, see & listen, experience, practice and then only preach own development. So place like Puttaparthi and Shirdi are now human workshop for servicing and oiling as that of new vehicle for free servicing.

    Om Shanti, Shanti, Shanti

  11. Umesh says:

    Respected Brother,
    Pranam.

Your article on yoga & onion on sai spirituality is very much interesting. It shows the simplicity of the Baba. Though the type of food is Tamasika, it could be easily digested by Baba having no effects on his mind &nature. It implies he is a super natural person .

A complete surrender in faith to Sadguru is necessary for realisation.
    Yours sincerely
    Umesh.

  12. Dr. Krishna Ch Sith says:

    Dear Dr.Panda,

The attire, odd behaviour, activity & food choice of Sai Baba may mislead any person to accept him as a Param Guru with supreme knowledge for seeking his blessing for any cause. A person deeply involved with Astha,Nistha & Faith on Sai Baba is duly blessed & rewarded for his suffering & any other reasons.

    Pranam kaka,

The content of article is nice and meaningful. In our religion in almost all cases while preparing “Bhog” for God onion is prohibited. If we see things in a pure and open heart then we’ll see the real meaning. The inner thinking should be pure, it doesn’t matter what we are doing.
