Giving Back to Society as Senior Citizen

Jivane yavadadanam syat pradanam tato’dhikam,
Ityesa prarthana’smakam Bhagavan paripuryatam.

O God! we pray you to fulfill our desire to give more to the society than what we receive.

Charity need not only be monetary. It can be giving of our time, talent, knowledge, love or compassion. This giving back brings a new purpose to life in senior years. Not only does giving back to society help the less fortunate; it also brings to the giver a tremendous sense of satisfaction and happiness. Those people who give back to society are the happiest and most content knowing fully well that they have contributed in some way to make a qualitative difference to the lives of others. It is but natural that the wise and the secure senior citizens wish to give back to society more than what they have received.

It has been a time span of 5 years as on March 1, 2013 since I retired from the post of Chief District Medical Officer Bargarh Orissa on attaining the age of superannuation i.e. 60 years of age on February 29, 2008. Basing on my efficiency, proficiency and seniority in service during the last 5 years of service I had the rare privilege to serve in my Home District Bargarh as Sub-Divisional Medical Officer Padampur Dist. Bargarh, Additional District Medical Officer Bargarh and Chief District Medical Officer Bargarh with administrative power, public prestige and social honour of the post held in Orissa State Medical & Health Services.

I and my wife after my retirement preferred to stay in a joint family with our offspring than to stay as a nuclear family at our native place in our old age for better physical, mental and emotional support in a joint family set up. On the other hand I had to leave my comfort zone of leading life with friends, relatives and old colleagues in my native place, district and state where I was having a worthy social recognition as a professional doctor amongst the public. Consequent upon my extra-ordinary decision, I had to lead my post retirement life in a completely changed social setup having only company of own family members. After residing in Gurgaon Haryana (N.C.R. Delhi) for about one year, we relocated to Bangalore Karnataka where we are residing at present.

In the changed circumstances, intuitive thoughts came to my mind that the present global world is connected through internet via World Wide Web and it will be wise on my part as a senior citizen to give something back in innovative and creative way to the society of my native place, district and state; and my country India and World as a whole by complementing and supplementing my present activities of Yoga and Spirituality with my scientific knowledge of medical profession.

During 2008 and 2009, I developed Yoga and Spirituality as ways of my life. I created the blog Yoga and Spirituality in 2010, nurtured it in 2011 and got it established in World Wide Web in 2012. On New Year`s Day 2013, I resolved for rejuvenating my life by means of Yoga and Spirituality. Now time has come to assess how far I have succeeded in giving back to society as a senior citizen as far as social obligation is concerned.

  1. Now residing in faraway Bangalore I have been publishing day to day post in Health Magazine with my scientific knowledge of medical profession for health education and awareness to give something back in innovative and creative way as a senior citizen to the society of my native Sub-Division Padampur , district Bargarh and state Orissa; and my country India and World as a whole through internet in Facebook in addition to my own blog website of Yoga and Spirituality.

    Welcome to Facebook

    Mahesh Chandra Panda in Facebook.

  2. Vinod Varma says:

Senior citizens are assets to any society as they have seen the world, balanced many turmoils and survived, and learned the true art of living. Sharing vedic and yoga practices in that light, as you do, is very important to world as most of us are destined for routine life of grihastha and yet would like to practice these amidst all these challenges. Therefore please do continue to share your valuable knowledge, experience and thoughts.

  3. Mr.Vinod Verma has nicely summed the comments. Senior citizens are real back bone of any society. Every body should attempt to contribute his best to the society and should not ever think that his contribution is more than received by him. No age is a bar to contribution. New born contributes most by way of joy brought to the family while old age may be at receiving end because of possible handicaps. Satisfaction is mental way of thinking and one should remain at peace and be happy in all circumstances. Hence whatever best can be done at any age should be done as duty. As per lord Krishna, “Our duty is to work and not to bother about fruits”.

  4. Dr.Binod Bihari Naik says:

    Respected Sir,

Your topic ‘Giving Back to Society as Senior Citizen’ gives emphasis to three words viz. Action, Reaction & Resounding which happen to be encountered by everybody in every moment at every place. But who are to recognise or reap its benefit. The answer is a wise man having spirit, get ignited or tested to your topic. He then becomes swayed & changed to perpetuate the same. Everyman experiences pain between two episodes of pleasures & vice versa in life but none can get ecstasy without thought for society & his birth is purposeless in comparison to other creations .Keeping with that views your marching spirit in post retired life of five years is a burning example to all categories of people to think of today for a healthy, wealthy, dedicated nation & equanimity to each other. So my earnest appeal to all to learn ways from Dr.M.C.Panda how to start Zero life to Yoga life & be spiritualised with him to dispel darkness of own.

Sir, really the topic giving back to society as a senior citizen in your short span of five years of retired life is highly recommendable and a hallmark like bank deposit in old age & as it is an internet exposure,it definitely brings consideration of world-wide readers for acceptance of your innovative and creative ideas. My prayer to Almighty to let you candle more and long to bring extra & wide bright contrast in society for enjoyable living especially for old deprived parents. As you sow so you reap: your topic Yoga & Spirituality is eternal, your path is eternal, and so you are going towards eternal.

    Thanking You,

In post retirement life you became a Yoga practitioner, then contributing to society through your blog. We get benefit from your articles/ thoughts. Paropakara swargaya…(benefiting others is divine). Ex-President of America(Perhaps Mr Kennedy) says-“Don’t think what you receive from country, but think what you give to country”. Many people think that senior citizens are old persons and useless like old newspaper. Consequently many old people are neglected and ignored by some part of society. But old is gold, old rice is tastier than new rice. There is a proverb in kosli-“Khete dhuda, ghare budha” i.e. old people are valuable resource like pond in agriculture field.

I want to grasp knowledge from your experience.
I do hope, you will continue to share.

    Dear Dr.Panda,

Your article “Giving Back to Society as Senior Citizen” is a timely reflection of your thought & activity rendered by you for the benefit of the society as Retirement from Govt.Service does not mean the end of all the activity & services rendered to the society through assigned Govt.Job within the frame work of Govt.rules & regulations.

It depends upon a person to manage the post retirement life with positive note to serve the people & society as a whole without seeking monetary gain through many ways as suited to the liking of a person`s Attitude, Nature, Knowledge & Experience gathered during the course of active public service. It not only keeps the person busy, active & fit but also gives immense pleasure to serve the common people and derive mental peace, harmony & ambiance.

    Pranam kaka.

The article is a learning subject for them who think that after retirement they are off no use and they have done so much, that nothing to do in the rest of their life. After serving the society for a long period still they have enough to do for those who really need a guide. The senior citizens have experience of life that we don’t have. If every senior person would think like you, then the society would definitely get the benefit.Thank you for the learningful article and we are lucky to have a role model in our life.

    • Rajesh Kumar Panda says:

Great Going Sir..You are really an inspiration for all of us, still nobody can match the standard set by you during your tenure at C.D.M.O.Bargarh office.I still remember the diarrhoea epidemic you handled during 2006-2007, overnight mobilisation of all staff including me, camp order I received at 2 O`Clock at night personally by office staff, so much commitment I have never seen by anyone till yet. I hope God will keep you active for another 100 years…

I am of the opinion we can give whenever we are capable and self sufficient and the gift to others can be in many different ways as you have mentioned. I fully agree with your views about life post retirement. My father was also into medical profession and now practices at home as he is also a retired pro. He too serves the community in his own special way. Life is all about giving , sharing and caring is what I have come to know at an early age. That’s why I keep myself busy with lots of activities when it comes to helping people too.

  27. Dear Sir,

I have started my govt service as my initial posting as a M.O.near Paikmal, Padampur Sub-Division of Bargarh district in the year 1984. In fact as per the govt record I should be retiring by next year as senior citizen, but it appears that I have to continue few more years as the Health Department compelled to increase the year of superannuation for Medical Teachers in Odisha due to acute shortage of faculties. As the Senior Most Prof of Human Anatomy in the State Govt Service during last year in Dec.2012, I had the unique opportunity to host National Conference of Anatomical Society of India where more than couple of dozen of senior citizen (Anatomist) from all over India, few of them 80+ attended and actively participated in academics during the Diamond Jubilee Conference of Anatomical Society of India held in Odisha after 54 years.

It is great to know coming out of Bargarh and relocated in a Tech city like Bangalore, you are actively working for the spiritual well being of Society.
May the heavenly blessings be always with you.

It is often felt to achieve, you have to take risk in life.
If U win,U can lead; If U lose,You can guide.

  28. Lovely article sir. Sort of inspiration for people like us who are fast approaching the senior citizenship.

  29. Hi Sir,
    Greeting from my family !!!

You may recall me, I am the youngest son of your colleague Mr.Manabhanjan Pujari (Former Head Clerk at S.D.M.O Office Padampur). I read your article and it’s really worthy. I have not so much idea regarding spiritual thought though while relating that with science I think to some extent your theory holds good here. Yes I do respect senior citizens. They are the best experienced members of Society. I believe they deserve the zenith in the society, though modernization exhales them & their ideology out. That’s an unexpected evil-ism. So, my notion is that being a renounced senior citizen in our locality you should enlighten the society.

Hope your endeavor will bring cheers to the society at large.

  33. Dear Sir,

You are really great, you did a lot for the society in two ways. I have lot of desires like you to do favour to the society who are in need; but I didn’t get settled myself till now, once I get settled definitely I will fulfill my goals like you.

  36. Oscillation of day/night helps to sustain our planet to this day…Means if only day or night is placed somewhere…That place is not survivable…So achievements and giving away…Makes the balance…For the future generations…Thank You Sir

  37. Respected Mahesh Sir,
You have taken a great step. Hope this step will inspire the next generation about the morality of giving more than taking.

    Dear Sir,

I really appreciate what you are doing to the society.Even being a man of age > 60 years you are energetic to contribute to the society.I too firmly believe that senior citizens are the assets to the society. They have a lot of experience in life & also the wisdom. If these assets are properly utilised then there can be drastic improvement in the society. So instead of thinking senior citizens as liability ,they should be given the opportunity to contribute to the society with the help of their of huge experience, knowledge & wisdom.

Wish you a long & prosperous life.

  42. Very much impressed by your decision with determination to do something for society as a responsible elderly person of society.I am honoured to be associated with you.

    Well Done Sir.

  43. Braja Kishor Panda says:

    Sir,

I have gone through your articles. I read and felt that the articles are the real composition of facts. Excellent articles Sir, keep writing.

  44. Dear Dr.Panda, your willingness to give something back to the society is highly appreciable. But in my opinion our living in it is not a bargain and hence does not call for a give and take relationship. So far spirituality is concerned,it is better, go on doing as much as you can if it is worth giving . Never assess it.
