Developing Human Personality by Education

Human personality has three dimensions viz. physical, intellectual and spiritual. All the three dimensions of human personality can be developed by education.

The physical dimension of human personality refers to man`s physical needs and growth. One should learn how to be physically strong and healthy. Right education helps in developing a strong stamina and healthy habits. Strong physical constitution helps one accept and face challenges of life. One should also learn the importance of physical exercises and games. Yogasanas and pranayama also are of much value in this context. They should become part of one`s life.

The intellectual dimension refers to a person`s thinking and memory skills. Reading articles, books and journals, visiting places and interacting with men of intellectual eminence all these go a long way in one`s intellectual growth. Exposure to healthy literature and a proper approach to learning help develop intellectual faculty. If one is given right direction at the primary level itself, it goes a long way in making one intellectually strong. Lessons in concentration and self-discipline play a key role in developing one`s intellect.

The spiritual dimension refers to our attitude whereby we view and consider things from the perspective of the invisible realities which guide our daily activities in all facets of our life on certain moral principles. The training in moral principles begins at home, early in life, while the growing child observes and interacts with his parents, siblings, friends and society as a whole. Changing socioeconomic situation keep the parents busy with their profession and personal issues and they leave the whole thing to routine school education which itself lacks in many ways. Today the world has become small, thanks to telecommunication and information technology. While it has a bright side, there are many darker aspects to it. Easy access to Internet has every possibility of mischievous exposure of the young minds to all negative thoughts and they are at risk to become a prey to many wrong things at an early age. One of the best ways to check this is that the parents and elders should spend quality time with children and also make them aware of the life-building ideas of great personalities of India and abroad.

  1. I have referred the topic ‘Education for Life’ authored by ‘Swami Supradiptananda’ published in the monthly journal ‘The Vedanta Kesari’ in its Vol. 100, No. 2 in drafting the article ‘Developing Human Personality by Education’.

  2. Well said Dr.Panda.

Invisible realities are important consideration but explained differently in different religions. Exposure to internet can only be guided and can’t be forbidden. Bans are mostly counter-productive. Development depends on infinite factors and parents have to be vigilant at almost every facet of development to be as effective as possible. A lot ofcourse depends on ‘Invisible realities’.Thanks for the introspective morning kick.

Of course Human Personality can be developed by Education but not by school education. School education makes a person qualified but not qualitified always. Illiterate persons are better than ill-literate persons. Unfortunately modern society thinks educated means literate. Do all literate are educated? Now a days children are more exposed to internet & information technology. So close guidance of parents is badly necessary; otherwise they may be influenced by bad things.

Thank you for posting this article.

  4. Dr.Binod Bihari Naik says:

    Respected Sir,

Human Personality by Education in Yoga and Spirituality is different from formal education; because formal education deals with day to day activity by knowledge acquired from parents, friends& elders and livelihood by virtue of different educational degrees from school, college & university. Those education having value based is definitely imparting status in family, society and nation ; but as duty bound it is full of tension, never quenches the thirst, still strides to show status called pseudo personality.

But when by education human blazes like a lighted electric bulb is Educare as stated by Bhagaban Satya Sai Baba, where human being is tension free. It is called Self-Education though indifferent from formal education, the latter is a part of former and called Sadhana (Austerity). Hence in formal education without Educare there is chance of fall a prey in personality and ending in demonic life but with Educare one leads always divine life. So Sir, your topic is very fruitful to young generation.

    Thanking you

Education, as it happens now, is focused only on the first two. But true education demands spiritual education as well. This is at the crux of social malaise that we see today. Without spiritual education and growth, life becomes a frustrating experience for individual and source of disharmony for society. Thanks for bringing this very relevant topic to front.

    Respected Brother,

Education does not mean to be only literate & highly qualified in one’s own life. I think right education leads a man to be perfect in all respects i.e. socially, economically & spiritually. It also gives the moral strength & peace in mind.

    Yours sincerely

  8. Santhosh says:

    Dear Uncle,
Thank you very much for the valuable information.

Education is not only just taking the inputs from the society and take the bookish knowledge, but also to spread the knowledge to the society.

As Sri Satya Sai Baba says :”The education which comes within the heart is called ‘Educare’, it is the knowledge which each and everyone have to develop from within. It is beyond the books, it pertains to the heart. The secular knowledge is got from the outer world, they are used to carry on the living; but the knowledge got from the heart, will help us to reach the Lord”.

    Om Sai Ram 🙂

    Kind Regards,
    Santhosh KV.

    Pranam kaka,

Developing human personality by physical education is essential but children and youngsters are more prone towards unhealthy diet habits. Eating junk food has become a daily routine for youngsters. Parents should be aware of this and teach their children what to eat. Health education should be mandatory for everyone because healthy and fit body thinks better and do well than an ill health body.

Thank you for sending mail linking the article.

  10. Sir,
    Happy Holi.

Sir,Your article on ‘Developing Human Personality by Education’ is Nice as well as Valuable article. As your article is related to the field of Education, it is very interesting to me to realise it. Sir as we know the educationists of world always admire the education system of ancient India as different mythological books describe the real education of our country. The students of that era spent their childhood in forest under the guidance of Guru from a long distance from their home though it was a big task for that time very painful for both parents as well as the students (shishya). We also well know that God had also gone through this noble path. Sir once if we thought about Sri Ram in the life of Raja Dasharath who sacrificed his affection, love towards his son in older days. Sir my point is that for that sacrifice they got the Marjyadapurusottam Sri Ram. It seemed to me as if your topic as well as description enlightened us about that type of education fortified with modern technology to nurture and grow all the three dimensions i.e.physical, intellectual and spiritual aspects of human personality.

Education may not be a pen paper exercise or examination. The present system of education believes in marks, grade as well as a competition of recite the topic. Really sir your article is highly essential topic for the educationist as well as the parents of the society. As we know that Education is the main object for the development of all aspects.

    Dear Sir,

The Article “Developing Human Personality by Education” is well mentioned to know more about the importance of education at every step of life in different angles and stages of life. However the Education is not only meant for the sake of Qualification, Job and Life; It needs to improve the physical, mental, spiritual, socio and economic development of the particular person/family as well as country.

The Social well being must need education but not necessarily only to earn money. I completely agree with the last paragraph of your article regarding the misuse of internet/communication facilities, more towards learning bad than good where the role of parents is most important to provide necessary proper guidance and support to their children towards their bright future mostly importantly to make them good Human Beings than leading wealthy and luxurious life. I definitely appreciate you in this regard the way you have shown to your Son and Daughters with utmost guidance and support.

  14. Dear Dr.Panda,

Your article ‘Developing Human Personality by Education’ is very meticulously drafted showing different methods, means, processes & true Education required for development of physical , intellectual and spiritual dimension of Human Personality. Spiritual Personality is dependent on one’s attitude to perceive certain moral principles from early life at Home & subsequently observing interacting with Parents, friends, others & society as a whole to develop a good moral & spiritual personality. You have rightly highlighted negative impact of darker side of Telecommunication & Internet in building moral Personality for which Parents & Elders are advised to devote quality time with their growing Children for building good Moral & Spiritual Personality.

It is one of the best article to be read, shared & discussed with others.
