Installation of Padukas with Inscription regarding Sai Baba`s Yogic Powers under the Neem Tree in Shirdi

As described in Sai Leela, Vol.11. No.I quoted in Chapter V of Shri Sai Satcharita in English by N.V.Gunaji published by Shri Sai Baba Sansthan Trust, Shirdi in 1834 Shaka (1912 A.D.) one Doctor Ramrao Kothare of Mumbai came to Shirdi for Baba`s darshan. His compounder and his friend, Bhai Krishnaji Alibagkar, accompanied him. The compounder and Bhai became intimate with Sagun Meru Naik and G.K.Dixit.While discussing things, these persons thought that, there must be some memorial of Sai Baba`s first advent at Shirdi and his sitting under the holy Neem tree. They thought of installing Baba`s Padukas there, and were going to make them of some rough stone. Then, Bhai`s friend, the compounder, suggested that, if this matter was made known to his master, Dr. Ramrao Kothare, he would prepare nice Padukas for this purpose. All liked this proposal and Dr. Kothare was informed of it. He came to Shirdi and drew a plan of the Padukas. He went to Upasani Maharaj in Khandoba`s temple and showed him his plan. The latter made many improvements, drew lotus, flowers, conch, disc, mace etc. and suggested that, the following Shloka (verse), regarding Neem tree`s greatness and Baba`s Yogic powers be inscribed. The verse was as follows:

“Sada Nimbavrikshasya mooladhiwasaat,
Sudhastravinam tiktamapiapriyam tam,
Tarum Kalpavrikshadhikam sadhayantam
Namameeshwaram Sadgurum Sai Natham”

Upasani`s suggestions were accepted and carried out. The Padukas were made in Mumbai and sent to Shirdi with the compounder. Baba said that they should be installed on the Pournima (15th day) of Shravan. On that day at 11a.m., G.K.Dixit brought them on his head from Khandoba`s temple to the Dwarkamai (Masjid) in a procession. Baba touched the Padukas, saying that, these are the Feet of the Lord, and asked the people to install them at foot of the Neem tree.

Works of Bhakti (Devotion) are proportionate to that in mind. Every mind has its own perception and programming of what it perceives as happiness. God has a central place in every religiously oriented mind. God builds His temples through such people and temples are source of peace to every mind who visits these places. Thanks for the enlightenment.

    Respected Sir,

The display of your above topic shows devotion of devotees of that time to topmost level as that of river has to merge to ocean. Hence installation of padukas under the neem tree is an eternal guide to every visitor to Shirdi to pay homage and benediction to be the relic of Sai Baba and to get relieved from mental agony. Is not it a miracle that is still existing with faith of an ardent Sai devotee. Yes no doubt it is mental faculty as it bows down the body and spears the soul sphere and one is able to transcend one’s self. The inner meaning of SAI means omnipotent, omnipresent and omniscient Father and it is fragmented to S means SHE (mother), A means association with I ( each being). Similarly BABA means Being, Awareness, Bliss and Atma. So SAI BABA is the incarnation of every believer for stress free life. Hence mere glance to padukas acts mental medicine. One should not remain astray in his Shirdi`s visit.

They believe that “Shitla Mata” is within the neem tree. Hence in every village there are huge numbers of neem tree. Besides religious side,it is hygienic also.

  6. Santhosh says:

    Dear Uncle,
    Sairam.

To surrender to the Guru’s feet is the only remedy for getting rid of the worldly problems and to attain peace in life. I was reminded of a parable about the importance of the Guru’s feet. Let me share it:

A sage, who was going on trips to other countries in purpose of spreading the Sanathan Dharma, once goes to America and establishes his Ashram in a sea shore. In the evenings daily, people who belonged to Indian religion and also some native Americans used to visit the Ashram and listen to the Pravachans (speeches related to God and Religion practices) given by the sage. The Ashram had number of books related to Indian Religious practices and Spirituality. An American used to regularly borrow books from Ashram and return it after reading them. One fine day in the evening the American asks the sage: “Oh, Master, I have read some books on the religious practices and I appreciate the religion very much, I read about the Master and the Disciple, I liked a lot! But only thing I couldn’t understand is ‘Why should Disciple bow down to Guru’s feet? Why is the feet given importance? The feet walks all around the streets, it becomes filthy sometimes walking in the mud, etc. Why won’t the head or hands given preference otherwise? Why only Feet are considered as highest priority and why should we surrender to the Gurus feet?” For this the sage tells the American, “Dear son, come let’s go for a walk, it’s evening, the sun is about to set, the weather is cool, let us spend sometime in the sea shore and talk.”, and they walk to the sea shore and sit on the stone.Meanwhile a fisherman comes with his net to catch the fish in the sea and he will get into the sea till his thigh is immersed in the water and starts to throw the net into the sea and after sometime, he pulls the net and was taking out the fishes caught into a bucket, and this process was going on.The sage tells the American to watch the fisherman’s activity carefully and after sometime, the Sage explains as follows: “Think that the Fisherman is the God, the net which he throws to catch the fish as the Maya of the world. So, the fishes which get caught in the net are the sinners and will die in sometime. But what is observable is that the fishes which were at the fisherman’s feet when he will be fishing will be safe and would not get caught in the net!!”

Similarly in our life’s also once we surrender to our Guru`s feet, and then there is no need to worry about the Maya of the worldly pains.Let us forever hold our Samartha Sadhguru Sainath Maharaj`s feet and be happy and free from the worldly pains and sorrows.

Sai Bless all. Loka Samastha SukhinoBhavanthu.Sainath Maharaj Ki Jai 🙂

    Pranam.

Having a Darshan of One’s own Deity we take Paduka as paduka is the purest one by which one gets purification after taking it.

  10. Respected Sir,
    Namaskar.

A nice article of Sri Sai Baba. The article clearly highlighted the importance of Baba’s activity, all the activity done by Shirdi Sai Baba is useful as well as has got universal acceptance by the devotees. The usefulness of Neem is very common for the people of our country. Miracle shown by Baba, i.e. the Maya of God which seems us to be strange ultimately melts in our heart on the flow of God`s blessing.
