Going the Distance while Growing Old

It has been a time span of 6 years as on March 1, 2014, since I retired from the post of Chief District Medical Officer Bargarh Orissa on attaining the age of superannuation i.e. 60 years of age on February 29, 2008. I have travelled the distance of 6 years in my post retirement life and grown older by 6 years becoming 66 years old.

To many people, growing old seems like the end game of chess; life winding down in a series of small moves with lesser pieces. As I age, I have discovered this is not true. Growing old is a game of verve, imagination and excitement. The ageing game is a sport for which childhood, youth and maturity are no more than a preparation. Its scope comes as a surprise. It expands my life at a time when I apprehended to diminish. It demands an excellence that no longer seemed necessary. It asks me to surpass what I did at peak of my powers.

During 2008 and 2009, I developed Yoga and Spirituality as ways of my life. I created the blog Yoga and Spirituality in 2010, nurtured it in 2011 and got it established in World Wide Web in 2012. During 2013, I succeeded in rejuvenating my life by means of Yoga and Spirituality. The freedom I got from public and professional activities on my retirement from the post of Chief District Medical Officer Bargarh Orissa on February 29, 2008 since last six years is disciplined by practicing Yoga and Spirituality in my post retirement life.Through the blog Yoga and Spirituality I have crossed the boundary of District and State to National and International level going the distance while growing old.

If a person is happy with his past performance, he has a mind full of happy memories.
If a person is content with what he has, he is happy in present.
If a person has secured his basic needs of future life, he is not anxious.
If a person uses his surplus time in creative & pleasant activities, he is enjoying and sowing seeds of happiness.
If a person is taking tolerable troubles to help the needy and to improve his surroundings he is helping humanity.
Yoga and Spirituality are two disciplines which need to be professed as much as possible and are extremely helpful in old age.
    Hence all kudos!!

    Respected Sir,

Literally Yoga means union and Spirituality means to deal with Spirit which is nothing but energy, a constant unit and unique, never loses it identity and potency. It may transform and transfer to mechanical, electrical and magnetic forms but at last transcends to original process called Yoga. It is called long journey at soul level, medium at mental level, and very short at body level still we can’t grapse. This is the enigma in life. Baby becomes old and vice verse is Yoga and Spirituality; and one what understands it in between is Humanity.

    Thank You,
    Your Divine Brother

  3. Sir,
    Namaskar.

Really a fantastic article regarding the post retirement life.It is an outstanding article regarding the duty of a senior citizen. It is also an article which encourage the people those who have retired. Some people get frostated and some faces a lot of problem after retirement, which some time create mental as well as emotional problem to them.I think some people are unable to manage themselves with their next generation.Their unnatural thought as well as mental dissatisfaction convert them energyless. Those crucial period should be managed only by the spiritual thought with yoga and pranayama. They always should be tension free and try to be risk free with their work which will make them good and healthy senior citizens. A nice article in which you are the living example for such type of people.

    SaiRam.

Amazing job you are doing. The age of the Heart is important than the age of the body. If the heart is kept young and active, the body will be active and enable us to explore more ourselves and also to drive deeply into the ocean of happiness and strive to keep ourselves active and making us feel young.

    Pranam kaka,

It depends upon person’s own perspective how the post retirement life would be spent.Growing old means a life full of experience and thinking power which one can utilize to serve the society. With the flow of life, establishing own unique identity after retirement is tough. For all that we need strong will power. By engaging in various activity we could live a better, healthier life and would be a source of inspiration for all. You are always been an inspiration for us.
