History of Sai Satya-vrata Puja

As described in Chapter XIII of Shri Sai Satcharita, “One Bhimaji Patil of Narayangaon, Taluka Junnar, Distt. Poona, suffered in the year 1909 from a severe and chronic chest disease, which ultimately developed into tuberculosis. He tried all sorts of pathies (remedies) but to no effect. Losing all hopes, he ultimately prayed to God, “Oh Lord Narayan, help me now!” It is a well-known fact that, when our circumstances are well, we do not remember God but when calamities and adversities overtake us, we are reminded of Him. So, Bhimaji now turned to God. It occurred to him that, he should consult Mr Nanasaheb Chandorkar, a great devotee of Baba, in this respect. So, he wrote to him a letter, giving all details of his malady and asking for his opinion. In reply, Mr Nanasaheb wrote to him that, there was only one remedy left; and that was to take recourse to Baba`s feet. Relying on Mr Nanasaheb`s advice, he made preparations for going to Shirdi.

He was brought to Shirdi and taken to the Masjid and placed before Baba. Mr Nanasaheb and Shama (Madhavrao Deshpande) were present there. Baba pointed out that, the disease was due to the previous evil Karma and was not disposed to interfere. But the patient cried out in despair that, he was helpless and, sought refuge in Him, as He was his last hope and prayed for mercy. Baba`s heart melted and He said, “Stay, cast off your anxiety, your sufferings have come to an end. However, oppressed and troubled one may be, as soon as he steps in the Masjid, he is on the pathway to happiness. The Fakir here is very kind and He will cure the disease and protect all with love and kindness”. The patient used to vomit blood every five minutes, but there was no vomiting in the presence of Baba. From the time, Baba uttered the words of mercy, the malady took a favourable turn. Baba asked him to stay in Bhimabai`s house, which was not a convenient and fit place but Baba`s order had to be obeyed. While he was staying there, Baba cured him by two dreams. In the first dream, he saw himself as a boy, suffering the severe pain of a flogging, which he received for not reciting his poetry lesson before his class-master. In the second dream, someone caused him intense pain by rolling a stone up and down over his chest. With the pain, thus suffered in dream, his cure was complete and he went home.

He then, often came to Shirdi, gratefully remembering what Baba did for him and prostrated before Him. Baba also did not expect anything from devotees but remembrance, unswerving faith and devotion. People in Maharashtra always celebrate Satya-Narayan Puja in their homes every fortnight or month but, it was this Bhimaji Patil, who started a new Sai Satya-vrata Puja, instead Satya-Narayan-vrata Puja, in his house, when he returned to his village”.

  1. I worked as an honorary physician for a very brief period from August 19, 2008 to September 11, 2008 at Saikripa Hospital, Bargarh Orissa. The self-motivated volunteered honorary service to the distressed and needy patients in Saikripa Hospital Bargarh which gained momentum six years back on August 19, 2008 initiated the spiritual inspiration of Sai Baba in me to become a Shirdi Sai Baba devotee on October 14, 2008 to devote my time and energy in my Spiritual Journey as Shirdi Sai devotee.

    Dear Uncle,

Thanks a lot for sharing the extract from Sri Sai Satcharitha.

The Vrat, Poojas are all done by us to God as per the principles laid by our Shastras. The Arathi, the archana, the rituals like palki procession , rath yatra, etc are also been followed from times innumerable.

The uniqueness of our Sadhguru Sai as he says in Satcharitha that he is just hunger for the love of his devotees. Then people started to offer prayers, arathi, etc. As Sai loves his devotees, he accepted everything. In reality Sai does not long for prayers, Vrat, etc. He just needs Love and out of love towards Sai, whatever a devotee offers, Sai accepts it and gives the devotee everlasting joy and blessings.

    Jai SaiNath.

  3. The stories of faith, miracles and deeds of God, Priests, Gifted people etc. originate from some basis and are perpetuated by words of mouth/ later published in holy books / constructions of shrines for posterity. The devotees faith is reinforced and benefits of devotion are received by the devotees. It may flourish as blind faith and unlimited accumulation of money and offerings in the hands of custodians of places of worships. Some of it goes to works of charity but lot of accumulates beyond the eyes of general public and sometimes is cause for fights for control over this heritage. Ultimately men need some God and their respective faith in Some fulfills that need.

  4. Dr.Binod Bihari Naik says:

    Respected Sir,

Actually people of Kali Yuga are puzzled & dwindling and not strict to any principle of nature bestowed and framed by Almighty. Hence sufferings are the consequences of their past actions mostly which are not at all known to them. As a result they adopt any method encountered to alleviate or lessen their agonies. The Sai Satya-vrata puja is one kind to relief pain and to get pleasure by one in life, but one can never enjoy its result to favourable extent unless he has full faith in Almighty. So remember mere performance of ritual (puja) is just showy spiritual exercise that pertains nothing but ego only. It enhances more sufferings. Hence one should be guarded and guided by himself to catch the universal-self which is true Yoga and Spirituality.

  7. Respected Sir,
    Namaskar.

A nice article regarding the Miracle of Sai Baba. The people of that time to till date believe the wonderful activities of Baba as miracles of God. Even in the era of science and computer still then the people start their activities by taking wish and blessings of God. The blessing of Sai Baba cured the disease is not a simple thing; it is really Great. By the wish of God all things happen in the Earth. Man is just the media of such activity.

  8. Purnima Panda says:

    Pranam kaka,

We perform puja to overcome all the obstacles and miseries of life. When we have all pleasures, health and wisdom in life we forget God. One must understand that if one forgets to be thankful for gifts received from the Lord, one have to go through another test until one remembers to remember. We have to remember not to ignore or forget the Lord’s grace.
