Granting Consecrated Books by Shirdi Sai Baba

It is described in Chapter XXVII of Shri Sai Satcharita that- It was the habit of some devotees to take to Baba some religious books, of which they wanted to make a special study and to receive the same book from Him, after they were touched and consecrated by Him. While reading such books daily, they felt that, Baba was with them.

Once Kaka Mahajani came to Shirdi with a copy of Eknathi Bhagawat. Shama took this book to read in the Masjid. There Baba took it from him, touched it and turning some pages here and there, gave it back to Shama and asked him to keep it with him. When Shama said that it belonged to Kaka and had to be returned to him, “No, no,” replied Baba. “As I have given to you, you better keep it; it will be of use to you.” In this way many books were entrusted to Shama. Kaka Mahajani after a few days, came again with another copy of the same Bhagawat and gave in Baba`s hand. Then Baba gave it back as Prasad and asked him to preserve it well, and assured him that, it would stand him in good stead. Kaka accepted it with reverence.

Shama was a very intimate devotee of Baba and Baba wanted to favour him in a particular way by giving him a copy of Vishnu-sahasra-naam, as Prasad. Baba gave the copy of Vishnu-sahasra-naam book possessed by Ramadasi to Shama without consent of Ramadasi and said to Shama, ”Shama, this book is very valuable and efficacious, so, I present it to you, you read it”. When Ramadasi demanded the book possessed by him to be returned back by Shama, Sai Baba said to Ramadasi, “Shama had no concern with it. I took it up Myself and gave it to him. You know it by heart. I thought Shama might read it and benefit thereby, and so I gave it to him”. Then Ramadasi calmed down and said to Shama that he would take ‘Panch-ratni Gita’ in return. Shama was much pleased and said, “Why one, I shall give ten copies in return”.

Baba always loved those, who studied Brahma-vidya (metaphysics) and encouraged them. Once Bapusaheb Jog received a post-parcel. It contained a copy of Gita Rahasya by Lokamanya Tilak. Taking it under his arm he came to the Masjid and prostrated himself before Baba, when the parcel fell at Baba`s feet. Baba enquired what it was. It was opened then and there, and the book was placed in Baba`s hand. He turned some pages here and there for a few minutes and took out a rupee from His pocket, placed it on the book and handed the same with the rupee to Jog and said to him, ”Read this completely and you will be benefitted”.

  1. I don’t find anything in above story except that it promotes blind faith. Blind faith is necessary if you want to feel God as God can’t be felt by people who use their brain. Blind faith can create God in stone, what to say of living individuals. Searching God in various places of worship of various sects, including devotion to Sai Baba is part of same faith. Our faith (blind) gives us strength, peace and tranquility though obviously not without cost. Cost comes in form of proliferating centers of “Messengers Of God” in every other street.

  2. Respected Sir,😋😋

Granting Consecrated Books by Shirdi Sai Baba is His divine game among His earnest and closed rather to say fully surrendered devotees as they were staunch and pure transparent in devotion to Sai Baba. Here Divine current passed from Baba to devotee and same among all devotees, as such they did not feel difference among them. Hence they had no feeling to whom Baba granting consecrated books, they enjoyed a lot getting those like ambrosia. These are esoteric relationship difficult to grasp but easy to culture, make habit to practise; one who will not be a part of it, it is not and those who are blessed, for them it will not be blind belief; it has inherent truth and drags any one to be embodied with same phenomena.

I am rather perplexed to know how Hindu devotees were benefitted spiritually by reading Hindu Shashtras like Bhagawat, Vishnu-sahasra-naam and Gita consecrated by Shirdi Sai Baba who was a Muslim Fakir !!!

    • Sai Baba’s unique gifts and yogic powers appealed to people of all religions irrespective of caste, creed, or religion. He allowed both Hindu and Muslim rituals and prayers inside His Dwarakamayi and accepted dakshina from devotees visiting Shirdi of all castes/religions without any distinction. He encouraged Hindus and Muslims to celebrate important rituals happily together and was impartial to both of these sects loving them equally. His Dwarakamayi (mosque) was always open to all people – then and today to all people that seek refuge in Him regardless of their background and truly is a pilgrimage place for promoting oneness and human unity.

  4. I augmented my knowledge about Sai Baba. I am not agreed with Karunakar Pandit who commented Baba as Muslim Fakir. There are lots of Hindu followers of Baba which compelled Sankaracharya to react.

  5. Sir,

    Dear Uncle,
    Sairam..

The mere touch of a Sadhguru on any object makes that object very sacred as the Sadhguru is the Perfect soul and have no impurities. The intention is just to make the devotees’ or disciples’ thoughts pure and help to achieve the aim of life easily and make the path easy to traverse flawlessly. The disciple should always anyhow be concentrating on getting delivered it from this material world for which only Guru can show the path.

Thanks for the beautiful article 🙂
    Thank You,

  8. Purnima Panda says:

    Pranam kaka,

Spiritual liberation requires the help of a liberated person that is Sadguru, without his grace or favour none can make progress. A Sadguru never curses anyone, even his anger helps the disciple. The advantage of depending on a Sadguru is unique and is superior to depending on God because God never materializes to give instructions. Acquisition of disciples is not Guru’s profession ; it is his heart’s inspiration. The Guru cares for and guides the disciple hoping that one day the disciple will get spiritually enlightened.
