Overcoming Misery due to Illness

Imagine that you are retired, your post retired life is going very well and you are very proud of all your achievements. You have got supportive joint family until one day something very unfortunate happens to you. You become ill and your illness is diagnosed to be cancer. This scenario has happened in my life since May 2015.

Thinking positively is no easy matter but it is important to be enthusiastic about life again. There are only two choices for you to make. You can stay depressed and complain about your problems till the rest of your life or you have the option of trying to make most of your life even with your limitations. We all know that cancer patients who remain positive live longer than those who become very depressed. In your misery due to illness you will always be in your own company. You can either cheer yourself up or make yourself miserable. But first of all you need to take care of yourself and make sure that you can keep yourself as comfortable as possible in day to day life especially when you are advised not to stress and strain your mouth parts by talking over phone with your friends and relatives till operated portion of mouth heals completely and back to almost normal shape.

One has to engage himself in his hobby in day to day life without support of other persons or disturbing others especially in chronic illness like cancer where post surgery recovery and radiotherapy treatment last for months together. I have been engaging my time mostly using the social media networking website Facebook. On May 21, 2015 through Social Networking in Facebook, I posted about my swelling of right upper gum diagnosed as cancer and that I had radical excision surgery to that effect on May 13, 2015 for information to all my Facebook friends, relatives and family members at large with the message that “Cancer is so limited…it cannot kill the spirit of life”. I got quite a good number of likes and comments for the way I am fighting against cancer with much mental and emotional strength. Since that day, I am regularly posting my posts in Facebook on morning quotes, health magazine, photos of my remarkable events etc. on day to day basis. I am reciting morning prayer, listening spiritual bhajans of Shirdi Sai Baba and reading Shri Sai Teeka in Odia daily in morning, noon and night. I am reviewing my daily blog stat of Yoga and Spirituality through Internet in World Wide Web and overwhelmed with joy and ecstasy of fruits reaped by my sustained and continuous nurturing the website when I am viewing the feedback of a good number of visitors of different countries of the world reading a good number of different articles published in the blog Yoga and Spirituality for last 5 years since May 2010.Subsequent to publication of my article Power of Faith in Spiritual Life in Yoga and Spirituality on May 1, 2015 before my surgery for cancer, in post-surgery recovery period on June 6, 2015 I have published my article Cancer is so limited…it cannot kill the spirit of life in my blog website of Yoga and Spirituality and on July 1, 2015 my last article The Significance and Purpose of Prayer was published in the blog website of Yoga and Spirituality. The articles have got good responses from comment authors in website of Yoga and Spirituality.

Being engaged in all these positive mental, emotional and spiritual activities in day to day life, I am overcoming misery due to illness.

  1. Fight till last breath. Enjoy every moment as it is the last one available. Never dampen spirits. Positivity always helps, negativity harms. Take good care of yourself, especially in old age. A great lesson in air journey, “First put on your own mask, before outing to help others.” Same is true of fighting a disease, “Take care of yourself in best possible way. Keep your spirits high. Keep yourself busy in positive activities.” These are few of slogans and lessons which emanate very well from activities and life. Keep it up.

    • I started receiving post-operative radiotherapy treatment from June 22, 2015 in adjoining part of Right Upper Gum scheduled for 5 days in a week as OPD procedure in Department of Radiation Oncology Mazumdar Shaw Cancer Center Bangalore where I had radical excision surgery for Cancer Right Upper Gum on May 13, 2015. Patients experience a number of side effects during and after radiotherapy like pain, fatigue, skin reactions, mucositis, xerostomia, taste changes, shortening of mouth gap and mucosal candidiasis. On August 14, 2015 my post-operative radiotherapy treatment course was completed and convalescence period of illness commenced. Now time has come how the side effects of radiation subside and how much my physical shape, size and function of face return to lead normal life.

      • Dear Dr.Binod,

Thanks for your visit with your wife and son Tushar to our Bangalore home today noon on August 19, 2015. Coming down after such a long distance journey from Bargarh Odisha and searching our new house in Bangalore reflects your sincerity of meeting a friend who is in misery due to illness of Cancer. Being a practicing surgeon even after retirement, you had a physical look at the site of operation and went through the histopathology report of the removed tumour, post-operative discharge summary and post-operative radiotherapy discharge summary. You are of the opinion that the severe side effects of post radiation therapy would subside in a few days and you are quite hopeful that I will back to almost normal life within months.

Many many thanks again for your kind visit to our Bangalore home.

      Respected Sir,

I am extremely happy to know that my visit to your home made you relaxed so extensively that your face indicated that it would have been disease free. You have valued my mere presence to be so precious which I could not mark at that time,or else I would have spent more time for better outcomes. No doubt we are linked spiritually and sharing homely affairs at times, still your convalescence period is wanting physical presence of friends.I viewed thoroughly your treatment records and part involved. My remarks stand that you are free from disaster and cancer is cancelled by Divine doctor, however don’t neglect to avert from advice of treating doctor.Because both are same as facets of same coin.Adherence to divinity imparts more curative effect what’s beyond your measurements.

  5. Spiritual Beliefs says:

Spiritual beliefs relate to cancer patients’ physical, mental, and social well-being. Patients reporting greater overall religiousness and spirituality report better physical health, greater ability to perform their usual daily tasks, and fewer physical symptoms of cancer during illness. The emotional aspects of religion and spirituality are more strongly associated with positive mental health. Spiritual well- being is unsurprisingly, associated with less anxiety, depression, or distress. Patients having religious mind have greater capacity to retain social roles and relationships in the face of illness.

  11. Almost a fortnight before, I had checkup CT Scan of Neck and Chest & physical checkup and consultation by Director & Surgeon-in-Chief Dr Moni at Mazumdar Shaw Cancer Center NH Health City Bangalore on October 23, 2017 almost 2 ½ years after I was diagnosed having Cancer of Right Upper Gum. Post-surgery radiation after effects and complications in swallowing and speech still persist. The good news is that there is no existing cancer lesion in the affected part or recurrence in head, neck, chest & upper part of abdomen. The bad news that there is ORN (Osteo-Radio Necrosis) of Right Lower Jaw Mandible bone for which the sinus wound over right cheek developed since March 2017 not healing up and mouth opening is getting shortened which is inadequate for taking normal food. The surgeon opined that let me continue with conservative treatment as such till such time I can take food by mouth with bearable pressure, discomfort & pain with existing limitation having periodical physical checkup every 3 months and they will only consider for another major reconstructive surgery of right mandible for survival purpose if such situation demands. I have to manage life with physical & functional limitation of affected body parts for the present.

  12. I am scheduled to undergo second reconstructive surgery for Osteo Radio Necrosis of right mandible as complications of post-surgery radiation as a cancer survivor due to Trismus, Constant Pain & Shortening of mouth opening to less than ½ finger in spite of 10 months conservative treatment on 9th January 2018 at Narayana Hospitals Bangalore where my radical surgery was done for cancer right upper gum on May 13, 2015. God is my healer. No matter what my body is telling to me, I trust God to heal me.

  13. 2nd Innings of Fighting Cancer as Cancer Survivor from January 9, 2018. I had second reconstructive surgery done by Dr. Moni, Director and Surgeon-in-Chief Head and Neck Oncology Surgery at Mazumdar Shaw Cancer Center Narayana Hospitals Bangalore on January 9, 2018 for complications of Post-Surgery Radiation as Cancer Survivor. God is my healer. No matter what my body is telling to me, I trust God to heal me. With my supportive family at Bangalore home and countless blessings & good wishes from my relatives, friends and fellow citizens known & unknown and Grace of God, I am quite hopeful to lead a better health in my 2nd Innings of Fighting Cancer as Cancer Survivor. You may read my article and responses on ‘2nd Innings of Fighting Cancer as Cancer Survivor’ published on February 1, 2018 in Yoga and Spirituality.
