Learning to Contribute

Learning to contribute energies us to live in a state higher than self-centeredness and gives us enthusiasm for unselfish work. Instead of living trapped in a self-centred, often meaningless and purposeless existence, we now have an opportunity to make a difference, live more meaningfully, and lead a purposeful existence with our contribution.

The first step in learning to contribute, we are to focus activity with purpose so that we learn to become effective and result oriented in whatever we do. Thus, when we take the second step towards becoming a contributor, we begin to focus on our evolutionary purpose. This is different just being a consumer of things and situations. It means being a contributor to whatever we do and find ourselves in. The search for evolutionary purpose sets the stage for the third step of creating proactive zones of purpose. To fulfil our higher evolutionary purpose of life we shift our purpose of life to creating or working towards a new state of affairs around us which not only enables us to live better but also all others in the same environment to live better. By environment we mean our own immediate family environment, our social environment, our cultural environment, physical environment around us, our workplace environment etc. To contribute we have to take responsibility for the betterment of the environment around us. We define for ourselves the space or an environment where we can make a difference in the overall state of affairs and then act proactively within that space. As we begin to contribute to the environment, we begin seeking sustainability of contribution and its impact.

Any contributor has sustainable impact only when it solves more than material need. It must also serve a more fundamental human need like empowering individuals or enabling them to find deeper fulfilment in life. Sustainable contribution takes place only when we are able to integrate function-level excellence with being-level excellence. Hence, contributors seek not only excellence in terms of professional or activity excellence, but in terms of character and inter-human excellence, and in terms of making an impact at both levels.

Writings out of our self-expression make our thought process creative and innovative that bring in feelings of doing something good without any expectation of getting something in return and sharing one`s feelings and thoughts along with others to promote feelings of togetherness and actions thereof to be beneficial to the society and community. Focusing writing articles with the purpose of learning to contribute, I started posting articles since May 2010 in my own blog website of Yoga and Spirituality and analysing monthly archives during 7 calendar years up to January 2016, what I have observed from the feedback of my readers and comment authors, I have achieved sustainable contribution on Yoga and Spirituality.

  1. Thanks for referral. Great effort, persistence, life lived and revealed. Every event in this universe is a change, every moment innumerable changes take place and no change is without impact, evolution and up gradation. Life is dynamic truth and whole universe is perpetually inter-impacting. We are nothing but a spec, when seen in holistic view. Past lays the foundation for future. Everything including living beings contribute their bit e.g. Sun is regularly burning and providing energy for all the changes on earth and surroundings. Individuals work within their limited sphere and help to contribute their actions to nature. Nature fulfils the needs of individual while individuals do their best in an effort to draw their needs from nature. Even persons who are apparently harming nature help to bring about a change by throwing new challenges to nature. Yoga and especially spirituality are a very vast field. Spirituality originated with the dawn of humanity in ancient civilisations and probably since the development of fore brain usage in human beings. Durability of change depends upon underlying strength of basics in the respective change initiated. Pagers had a very limited life span because of quick development of mobile phones. Addition of new knowledge / effective re-search with new suggestions and changes should probably be considered some perceptible contribution.

    Sir,
    Namaskar.

‘Learning to Contribute’ is really a nice article which enlightened the way of a living human being. It is true that some persons are able to express their views through contributing some helpful articles to the literary world. The main aim of humanity is also reflected through their personality. The social activity through out the whole life is only by the Almighty. We are the actors of the great living drama of the Creator. Sir, only such persons have the skill to contribute to the society something they earned in their previous life. It is a difficult task for the people who are busy in their own business and they have no time or mind to think about others as well as the society. Lastly I pray God for your healthy as well as smooth life in the year 2016.

    Pranam kaka,

It is a meaningful article. I think there are a few contribution that every person should be involved with, first is being a good citizen and another is to be a good role model. Being a role model would include things such as being responsible, being good mannered and willingly give a helping hand to people in need. If we start doing these small things then we can think big to contribute for the betterment of society.

  6. Prakash Padhan says:

    Respected Sir,
First of all I pray to God for your happy & healthy life in this new year 2016.

Saint Kabir says-“bada hua so kya hua jaise ped khajur, panchhi ko chhaya nahin phal lage ati dur..”that means life is meaningless if prudent person is not contributing to society. But you are not that kind of person. You are contributing to society years after years through your articles/posts. You have set example for other senior citizen. It also inspires us for karma (hard work).

Sorry for reading your article in late. Actually last week I came to Jharsuguda from my village, then to Delhi and now to Patna.

    • The road map envisaged in the article ‘Learning to Contribute’ provides us a set of milestones one should look for as we journey from an activity centred life to a purposive life aimed at developing sustainable contribution. We reach a stage when we contribute to both to other human beings and to our own evolution; We can now see our transformation from a worldly life to a spiritual life in the ladder of evolution from a transaction ideal to the contribution ideal, and then finally to the Karma Yoga ideal.
