Arise, Awake, and stop not till the goal is reached.

‘Arise, Awake, and stop not till the goal is reached.’This statement is Swami Vivekananda`s most popular phrase. The statement naturally presumes that we are not awake; indeed, we have busied ourselves with the outer world, forgetting our real nature. We may be awake to the external world, but to reality within, we are asleep in regard to our consciousness. We should awaken our consciousness within by spirituality.

‘Arise, Awake, and stop not till the goal is reached.’ We should arise out of the present state of inertia; arise from our state of rest. Life might have given us repeated blows. We blame the world, but it is our slumber that has caused all this suffering. We must awaken to our true identity—become aware of its existence.

‘Arise, Awake, and stop not till the goal is reached.’ This statement is important even in ordinary daily life. Wherever we might be, we should not stop progressing or working. We should continue our struggle. We should never be dejected or depressed when failures torment us. We should go ahead, and stop not till the goal is reached.

  1. I have referred the article ’Three Transforming Statements’ taken from the teachings of Swami Vivekananda, Sri Ramakrishna, and Holy mother Sri Sarada Devi published in the monthly journal ‘The Vedanta Kesari’ in its Vol. 100, No.6 in drafting the article ‘Arise, Awake, and stop not till the goal is reached’.

  2. ‘Arise, Awake, and stop not till the goal is reached’ is important way of living especially when one intends to live for posterity. Life is assessed by the preferences of person leaving impacts, memories, inventions, activities performed on earth and hence the memoirs of family, society and nations. Stronger is the impact, better it is for the posterity. Great achievements are possible only with consistent perseverance, opportunities and suitable environment for the growth. Arising from inertia and awakening from ignorance and working is must for fruitful life.

    Dear Sir,

It’s a nice article and it will surely enhance the spirit towards achieving the goals.I have read this quote more than hundreds of times; each time I come across some problems and therefore I read. However, I understand the real meaning now. Our goal should be beyond the professional career; it is the Holy aim to find out the right path and keep going until our destiny to meet Paramatma.

There may be another meaning of this phrase. Vivekananda says-Arise,that means we are fallen souls. He says-spiritual development is the only development. We are aware but not awake. In 2nd chapter of Gita Lord Krishna says-“ya nisha sarbabhutanam tasya jagarti sanyami, jasyam jagrati bhutani SA nisha pashyato muneh”. Which is night to all beings, God realized yogi keeps awake.

    Thanks sir for nice post.

    Pranam ji.

We are not awake…We should awake our consciousness…Blaming the world…We should continue our struggle…Thanks for giving these lines. While reading your article I merged with myself in other words lines made the merging.

    Pranam kaka,

This article enhances the spirit that one should remain in inner independent awareness. When we are inspired by some great purpose, all our thoughts break their bounds, our minds transcend limitation, and we find ourselves in a great and wonderful world. If we are determined to reach our goal, realization of truth would happen in a natural way.

    Respected Sir,

‘Arise, awake and stop not till goal is reached’ is the inspiration to human society by our legendary Monk Vivekananda. It is very easy to spiritual one but for an ordinary man it is very difficult to grasp.Hence he who desires to ascend to human stage he has to practise how to arise and what’s meant to awake. It is nothing but to reveal self and to uphold it one has not to stop on the way of spirituality till it’s ended in realisation. This is main purpose of human species in the cascade of creation drama of Almighty. Hence Vivekananda descended as messenger of God for at least for young mass of timeless ages for self inspiration and to inspire.

    Thanking for the topic.
    With regards

  8. Sir,

A nice article which describes about the most famous line of Swami Vivekananda which is the universal truth line of the world. To achieve the goal it is essential to arise and awake. Sir, however this line is used in general sense that the goal is their aim or Sir, please clarify whether it is the path of Almighty. As per your description it is clear with regard to spirituality but Sir, please you may clear my doubt with regard to worldly life.

    Namaste Dr.Pandaji,

Your quote from Swami Vivekananda:”Arise,Awake, and stop not till the goal is reached” is a very apt & valuable incentive for every human being, who becomes a victim of a vicious circle of unsurmountable problems one has to face in his/her daily life, which pulls him/her down deeper & deeper into the quagmire of depressing situations which seem endless. As a result, though one is fully awake physically, it is fully up to the individual to introspect with his innerself & rise above the trials & trepidations so that he can find peace by connecting with spirituality.

    • Dear Susant babu,

Thanks for your free and frank opinion about self-expression through own blog and micro-blogging in social networking. However, I am pulling on well in both spheres. I had a bird`s eye view of two articles ‘ଅଲିମ୍ପିକ ରେ ଭାରତୀୟ ପଦକ ଓ ପଦକ ବିଜେତା and ବର୍ଲିନ ପ୍ରାଚୀର ଓ ଜର୍ମାନ ଗଣତନ୍ତ୍ର’ of your blog which are very informative and of international importance. Hope you will continue to be one of my esteemed reader and comment author of my blog.

  12. Sudhir Sahu says:

In our India, all intelligent persons recognize the Great man after leaving their external body, but not at present. Seeing this, Vivekananda said, “People laugh at me because I am different(earn-less and nameless), but I laugh at them because they are same”.
