Cultured Individuals Build Cultured Society

The English word ‘culture’ is derived from the Latin term cult or cultus, meaning ‘tilling, care, refinement and worship’ which means cultivating and refining a thing or subject matter to such an extent that its end product evokes our admiration and respect.

Social aspect of culture is basically influenced by association of individuals with their own family members. Though this association is taken to be granted, it has become very necessary to bring about a sense of togetherness and cohesion within a family as such cohesion is almost absent now-a-days in most of the families due to mechanical way of life. The secret of good human relationship with others is unselfish love and genuine consideration for the needs and feelings of others with sense of responsibility and duty towards others. The act ‘charity that begins at home’ need be gradually extended to the neighbours, friends and relatives as also other people, leading ultimately to the highest ideal of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam ( the whole world is my family ).

It is natural that a cultured and refined individual will easily succeed in his efforts to build a cultured society at being in harmony with the other members of the society for the very reason that he is a cultured and refined individual.

  1. The culture of a society depends on the culture of the individuals comprising it, as also the relationship they have among themselves. Physical culture like practicing yogasanas, intellectual culture of speaking and studying multiple languages, understanding and practicing basic values of culture of religions and spirituality and developing interest in some of the art such as drawing and painting, song, music, dance and drama alike will strengthen growing and nurturing of holistic attitude of culture in individuals.

Excellent topic for world peace and highly admirable, because now the world is running to become pieces being engulfed by unsocial activities like terrorism ,barbarism etc. So spiritual mantra to make cultured human and healthy is the need of days. Every human must realise that no human has taken birth without love. Verily love is birth principle, make platform.

    Pranam kaka,

A very nice topic which comprises the relationship between culture and society. Culture is the method of the self-realisation of the individual and society. Between culture and individual the relationship is and always has been strangely ambivalent. We are at once the beneficiaries of our culture and its victims. Without culture, and without that precondition of all culture, language, man would be no more than another species of baboon.

    Respected Sir,
It’s a good article. Charity begins at home. Cultured individuals make cultured society. In Hindi there is a proverb-‘khud badlnge to duniya badlega’.

  7. Thanks Dr Panda for referral. Culture, being an English word, presents an impression that probably, English people might have learnt the best culture. On the contrary, they emerged to be the universal exploiters. Moreover culture is not simple language, attitude or dressing, it resides in heart of a person and trends in the society. English culture is competing, oppressive and downgrading others. I prefer to be simple, friendly and tolerant. It is thought provoking article. Every society has its negatives and positives. As every individual is unique in this world, so is each society and culture and should be respected and preserved. Love to Snigdha.

    Namaste Dr.Pandaji,

Your article “Cultured Individuals Build Cultured Society” is very timely, what with the state of affairs in all walks of life going haywire. It is not an exaggeration when one infers that there is a lesson for every individual on how he/she should lead a cultured & disciplined life & strive to be a beacon of light to others around & show them how to better their lives.
