Clarion Call of Swami Vivekananda to Awake and Arise

Swami Vivekananda in his clarion call to those who are weak said, “Tell it to men who are weak and persist in telling it. You are the Pure One; awake and arise, O mighty one, this sleep does not become you. Awake and arise, it does not benefit you. Think not that you are weak and miserable. Almighty, arise and awake, and manifest your own nature. It is not fitting that you think yourself a sinner. It is not fitting that you think yourself weak. Say to the world, say it to yourselves, and see what a practical result comes, see how with an electric flash everything is manifested, how everything is changed. Tell that to mankind, and show them their power. Then we shall learn how to apply it in our daily lives”.

  1. I have quoted the excerpt of speech delivered by Swami Vivekananda in London on November 10, 1896 on Practical Vedanta published in ‘Complete Works of Swami Vivekananda’ Volume II in drafting my article ‘Clarion Call of Swami Vivekananda to Awake and Arise’.

    Dear Sir,
It’s a nice article that had been meant to the youths.I used to read quotes of Swami Vivekananda;however I would like to read the whole text. Please recommend me which book to read.

    Om Sai Ram

  3. Thanks for referral Dr Panda. Swami Vivekananda is a big legend and I am a very small person to comment on his speech. Person’s perception about himself is coined by a complex set of circumstances prevailing in the person and around him. Motivational words do impact people but to a very limited extent. Most of the times, it goes on to add to calibre of speaker himself. Improving people is a very complicated task and requires efforts from schooling itself. Speeches help the people realise that they can perform better. Certain common problems in personalities may be addressed. Moreover it is difficult to fully understand the paragraph without reading full speech.

    Pranam kaka,

The article ‘Clarion Call of Swami Vivekananda to Awake and Arise’ is his inspirational call for India and rest of the World. The awareness of his own inherent powers urged him to go out alone into the wide World. He was the first religious leader in India to understand and openly declare that the real cause of India’s downfall was the neglect of masses. The downtrodden masses had lost faith in their capacity. So he spreads spiritual knowledge through education to infuse in them faith in themselves and strengthen their moral sense. His inspirational speeches are the guidance for people of all generation, caste and creed.

    Respected Sir,

It is relevant article on the occasion of Swami Vivekananda’s birthday. He is inspiration of youth like me. This is most powerful and evergreen speech. He became world famous and died at the age of 39. To be successful his message was -take an idea, think of it,dream of it,let your brain and muscle be of that idea.

  8. Madhusudan Mahunta says:

    Dear Sir,
    Namaskar.

Your article ‘Clarion Call of Swami Vivekananda to Awake and Arise’ collected from the ‘Complete Works of Swami Vivekananda’ Volume II, is a nice article by which we learn many things in life. According to Swami Vivekananda you should not be coward because coward dies many times before death. You shouldn’t feel yourself as a miserable weak hopeless person. You should feel yourself as a physically and mentally very strong person. If you mentally feel weak, you can not achieve your goal.

  9. Kedarnath Sahu says:

    Sir,
    Namaskar.

A nice article which enlighted about Swami Vivekananda. Starting from Bile-Naren to Swami Vivekananda with Bishwa Bijayee ( World winner ) is not a simple task for an ordinary man.He came with a divine blessing by the Almighty to protect as well as highlighted the Indian Culture all over the Globe. Vivekananda was inclined towards spirituality. He was influenced by his Guru Ramakrishna Deva, from whom he learnt that all living beings were an embodiment of the Divine Self; therefore service to God could be rendered by service to Mankind. After Ramakrishna’s death, Vivekananda toured the Indian subcontinent extensively and acquired first-hand knowledge of the conditions prevailing in British India. He later travelled to the United States representing India at the 1893 Parliament of the World Religions. Vivekananda conducted hundreds of public and private lectures and classes, disseminating tenets of Hindu philosophy in the United States, England and Europe. In India, Vivekananda is regarded as a patriotic saint and his Birthday is celebrated here as National Youth Day.Today it is my great pleasure to write the comment on your article ‘Clarion Call of Swami Vivekananda to Awake and Arise’.

  10. V Chandra Sekhar says:

    Namaste Dr.Pandaji,

Thanks for posting the article “Clarion Call of Swami Vivekananda to Awake & Arise” in your blog. This message has universal value & is meant not only for the youth, but for every human-being; whether he is infirm, disabled or elderly. The Great Swami Vivekananda, at every step, was setting an example by always practising what he preached, having been under the tutelage of Swami Ramakrishna Paramahamsa. Swami Vivekananda had the conviction and the gumption to daringly propagate his teachings even on foreign soil, despite several attempts by the locals there to alienate him. His Golden Words are of much relevance even in modern times.

    • Thanks Sekharji for his valuable comment on the article ‘Clarion Call of Swami Vivekananda to Awake and Arise’ with his conviction of understanding that ‘This message has universal value & is meant not only for the youth, but for every human-being; whether he is infirm, disabled or elderly”.
