Suffering as Karma for Spiritual Development

The book ‘Conscious Immortality’ recording statement of Ramana Maharishi mentions that “Individual human beings have to suffer their karmas for His purpose. God manipulates the fruits of karma; He does not add or take away it. The subconsciousness of man is a warehouse of good and bad karma. Ishwara chooses from this warehouse what He sees will best suit the spiritual evolution at the time of each man whether pleasant or painful”.

Ramana Maharishi has said that all suffering leads to God-realization. If it is accepted then the suffering which people endure are benign in the sense that this is their karma for their soul`s spiritual development. Nobility of soul and very many virtues are born out of suffering.

However we must never be indifferent to any suffering and should always act with all possible remedies and compassion. As all sages teach, if suffering comes our way, we must do our almost to relieve it. Ultimately we have to accept suffering in whatever form it is, it is but destined.

  1. I have referred the topic ‘The World Seen as the Field of Destiny’ published in Vol 122, No. 9 of ‘Prabuddha Bharata’ journal in drafting my article ‘Suffering as Karma for Spiritual Development’.

  3. Thanks Dr Panda for referral. My thinking is different. Being a science student, I try to put logic in every thing. One fact is that we should preferably presume the existence of God, but that does not mean that we should not use our logic at all. I also don’t agree very much with the title of this topic. Suffering is a subjective feeling and one should perceive all inputs as experiences rather then suffering. Spiritual development and suffering are inappropriately associated by our so called spiritual teachers. Life is projected as punishment for our misdeeds of past. Many of these concepts do not fit into rational logics of current scientific thinking. Basic purpose of spirituality is to guide the society towards positivity and not to escalate feelings of guilt for taking birth as human being. “Conscious Immortality” does not correlate well with concepts of science as there is no physical immortality of life. “The subconscious mind of man is a warehouse of good and bad karma”, can be thought of as carrying some resemblance to scientific facts, but this information should be selectively used for creating happiness, rather then leaving this job to be done by God. I think God is one word which has been extensively misused by our so called spiritual teachers. Preferably we should use standard books like Gita & Ramayna to take guidance in spirituality. I may be ignorant of deep thoughts put in these journals as I am not reading any. What I have written is purely spiritual concepts of practicing general surgeon. Regards and love to Snigdha.

  5. Dr Binod Bihari Naik says:

    Respected Sir,

My thought and emotion differs because I have learned and also cultivated that God’s creation is always for noble purposes and sustainable. He creates a lot on the Bhumata for His own visionary pleasure but non of those are able to be grasped though remain in the doctrine sphere of creation except human being.Hence human has basically soulic nature that’s not other than God’s nature. So human being showers and shares nobility and is treated as God but not himself is God.So very often human becomes denatured from the streamline and degraded himself and afflicted a lot of suffering to be remoulded to catch the lost tract. Hence he whirls the circle of birth and death till the ascent to human birth. As such I expound that one who has been blessed human birth can understand his own nature and able to ascend own abode that is nothing but the residence of Almighty that pervading everywhere and nowhere.Hence as a whole human being should be aware to cultivate and reveal how to realise to remain a bay of suffering. I benevolently conclude that benevolent KARMA is always rewarded and graceful even he puts a bite sometime and situation.Clean KARMA has no SUFFERING at all.

    With regards and thanks

  7. V Chandra Sekhar says:

    Namaste Dr.Pandaji,
Thanks for your enlightening article “Suffering as Karma for Spiritual Development”.

The general school of thought as far as I understand is that karma is what you experience in this janma for any any misdeeds you might have indulged in in your last janma(birth). All beings, whether big or small either in stature or age, have to bear the brunt of their karma and there is no escape. One can only use his present lifetime to do good deeds & get spiritually awakened so that he is safeguarding himself to alleviate his suffering from karma at least in his next janma(birth).

    Regards
    Sekhar

    • Thanks Sekharji for his valuable comment on ‘Suffering as Karma for Spiritual Development’ that all beings, whether big or small either in stature or age, have to bear the brunt of their karma and there is no escape.

  8. Kedarnath Sahu says:

    Respected Sir,
    Namaskar.

A nice article ‘Suffering as Karma for Spiritual Development’ which enlighted about Karma and Spiritualism. As we know generally Karma means action. It is related to the whole life process of a human. As per our Indian philosophy our birth is because of our Karma. Our Karma or actions may be good or bad decide our future. Karma is very deterministic. All the four systems of Yoga – Gyana, Raja, Bhakti and Karma teach us to live positively in our thought and words. This helps us in producing positive memories for good Karma. Our lives are based on as a coin of happy and sad events on both sides. It creates both happy and sad memories as per the directives of Almighty. Sad memories create violence in the mind of Human. If we remove our unhappy memories, it will help us live in a peaceful happy life. It is the pre-planned system managed by the God as per our Karma from the cycle of birth and death. It is very difficult to remove the unhappy memories from a person’s mind. It happens only by the path of God through Spiritualism. The process of Yoga and Spirituality is the medium to be happy in any circumstances, which you have been experiencing as well as setting an example for us as well as for the Society. It is so difficult to do but with practice and patience it can be achieved by a common human. This process is a spiritual development of Life through our Karma. This is also the way to destroy our negative thoughts and keep us positive. If we try to delete the negative feelings and memories from our mind, they come back with much stronger force by the directives of Almighty. At last it is evident that by positive thoughts, words and Karma we can change our thought and can become happy in any situations of our life which is clearly reflected in your life.

    Sorry for late comments, Sir.
