Involvement in Social Media Sustain Value Added Life of Senior Citizens in Physical Distress

I and my wife after my retirement as C.D.M.O. Bargarh Orissa on February 29, 2008 preferred to stay in a joint family with our offspring than to stay as a nuclear family at our native place in our old age for better physical, mental and emotional support in a joint family set up. After residing for one year in Gurgaon, Haryana (N.C.R. Delhi), we relocated to Bangalore, Karnataka. However I had to leave my comfort zone of leading life with friends, relatives and old colleagues in my native place, district and state of Odisha where I was having a worthy social recognition as a professional doctor amongst the public. Consequent upon my extra-ordinary decision, I had to lead my post retirement life in a completely changed social setup having only company of own family members.

Yoga and Spirituality

In the changed circumstances, intuitive thoughts came to my mind that the present global world is connected through internet via World Wide Web and it will be wise on my part as a senior citizen to give something back in innovative and creative way to the society of my native place, district and state; and my country India and World as a whole by complementing and supplementing my present activities of Yoga and Spirituality with my scientific knowledge of medical profession. I created my own blog Yoga and Spirituality on May 2, 2010 which has been carried forward as monthly Internet Journal uninterruptedly till date. Readers of many countries throughout World read my articles posted in my blog Yoga and Spirituality as documents available for public view through Google and other search engines in Internet. I have the pleasure to mention here that readers of more than 100 countries of world from India and abroad are reading and posting comments on my articles posted in my blog website Yoga and Spirituality.

Welcome to Facebook

I registered my name as a user in social networking website Facebook on June 15, 2011. My relatives, old friends and colleagues with whom I had worked during my service became friends in Facebook. Moreover I started creating a new circle of friends world-wide through social networking in Facebook. I have been posting photo & post on inspirational quotes, Yoga and Spirituality, social events, tours & travels and Heath Magazine in News Feed and day to day management as moderator and admin of Bargarh. Budasambar groups comprising mostly Facebook users of my native district Bargarh in Odisha and Health Bulletin group comprising mostly Health Professionals in Facebook. A good number of friends and group members in Facebook are actively associated in posting likes, comments and sharing my photos & posts in the blog website of Facebook.

Mazumdar Shaw Cancer Center NH Health City Bangalore

My post retired life was going very well and I was very proud of all my achievements until something very unfortunate happened to me. I became ill and my illness was diagnosed to be cancer of right upper gum since April 2015 which was operated on May 13, 2015 followed by radiotherapy completed on August 14, 2015. Cancer survivor of such case need to take care of himself and make sure that he can keep himself as comfortable as possible in day to day life especially when advised not to stress and strain mouth parts by talking much over phone with friends and relatives till structure and function of mouth back to almost normal. Moreover due to the weakness of whole body during convalescence and recovery phase one has to restrict his physical movements, even long distance and time consuming city tour. Under such circumstances, I could not take up my annual trip to my native state Odisha to meet and interact physically with my relatives and friends during 2015 the last Odisha trip being in November 2014. Thus after 7 years of eventful retired life from 2008 to 2014, I had to enter the stage of karma sannyasa during 2015. Being a cancer survivor with post surgery radiation complications since May 2015, I am confined almost inside Bangalore home & our residential layout Green Park Regency Sarjapur Road Bangalore.

Senior Citizen Forum GPR Bangalore

Since 2016 we the senior citizens residing in Green Park Regency Sarjapur Road Bangalore with our off springs as dependent parents have formed Senior Citizens Forum which has its daily evening session for one hour in Senior Citizens Corner in the campus. Rest of the day I have to remain engaged in my hobby in day to day life without support of other persons or disturbing others especially in chronic illness like cancer where post surgery radiation recovery last for years together. Having physical distress, disability and indisposition of operated and radiated parts of mouth and other body parts; I have been living my day to day life so to say with virtual world of social media.

Communicating in World Wide Web through Internet

Having sufficiently expanded and developed our own understanding of spirituality in vanaprastha (retirement from routine professional life) we enter into the stage of sannyasa which is meant for dedicating the qualities and virtues we have acquired towards the growth of humankind and inspiring others to attain inner freedom. Sannyasa is not escaping from life; rather it is running into life with greater wisdom, understanding and perception. This I am doing through Internet in World Wide Web through my own blog Yoga and Spirituality and social networking through Facebook and 3 Group Members of Family, 1967 MBBS entry batch mates and Green Park Senior Citizens in WhatsApp installed in my I-Phone on October 21, 2016. It is my pleasure to convey my readers and comment authors that though the number of posts published since May 2015 in my blog website of Yoga and Spirituality has been only one post per month due to my physical indisposition as a cancer survivor with post-surgery radiation complications, the numbers of views and visitors per month have been above 1700 & 700 for last 3 months (September, October & November 2017) comparing the previous blog stat of 1500 & 500 respectively. These might have been due to addition of responses relating to present activities and more so past activities reflected as memories in present either by my regular friends who are comment authors or myself as author supplementing discussion part of a good number of articles posted so far in blog website of Yoga and Spirituality. I would like to thank all my viewers of more than 100 countries around world for their continued supports in my endeavor to maintain rather upgrade the quantitative & qualitative aspect of the blog Yoga and Spirituality. So far Facebook is concerned, besides contributing my own post/photo of present and past in Newsfeed; I am mentoring as Admin-in-Chief and monitoring as moderator 2 Facebook groups of my native district Bargarh Odisha comprising a large closed group of 32,000+ members in Bargarh group and 2000+ members public group of Budasambar. I would like to thank all members of both the groups for remarkable quantitative and qualitative growth in participation of members active in viewing/reading and posts/likes/comments/shares in micro-blogging in Social Networking Facebook.

I would like to summarize the implications and effects of social media on my life as a senior citizen as “Involvement in Social Media Sustain Value Added Life of Senior Citizens in Physical Distress”.

    Dear Sir,

Nice narration of your post retirement life which depicts the post-retired transformation of a hardcore physician to a Tech-Savvy aka karma sannyasa. You had rightly mentioned in your article that, “Cancer is so limited…it cannot kill the spirit of life” ; it shows your passion which can’t be stopped for a mere disease.

I would like to quote the followings:

“The power of a pen is enormously larger than a sword”- truly shown in your posts.

    And

“The idea is to live young as late as possible”- the spirit should be continued as late as possible.

Awaiting for more articles in your blog site.

  8. Charity by Shirdi Sai BTM Ashram Bangalore

I have found out an unusual way in my spiritual quest as a Shirdi Sai devotee by Involvement in Social Media through WhatsApp to Sustain Value added Life of Senior Citizen in Physical Distress by online monthly donation since September 2017 towards Annadhan, Charitable Clinic and Ashram to SSSSS (Sri Sadguru Sainath Seva Samithi) managing Shri Shirdi Sai Baba Anand Ashram BTM Lay out Bangalore. On intimation about donation through Social Media WhatsApp to SSSSS (Sri Sadguru Sainath Seva Samithi), receipt of online donation is sent by SSSSS to me. Previously I was donating my monthly donation to SSSSS (Sri Sadguru Sainath Seva Samithi) managing Shri Shirdi Sai Baba Anand Ashram BTM Lay out Bangalore towards Annadhan, Charitable Clinic and Ashram directly in office during my visit to Ashram from May 2009 to May 2015. But due to my irregular visit to Ashram since May 2015 to August 2017 as a cancer survivor with post-surgery radiation complications I have started regular online monthly donation since September 2017. It is praiseworthy to be noted here that SSSSS (Sri Sadguru Sainath Seva Samithi) sends images (photo) of different program and activities of Shirdi Sai Baba Anand Ashram BTM Lay out Bangalore from time to time through WhatsApp.

  11. Thanks Dr Panda for referral. It is great inspirational summary of your post retirement socialization through internet. Fighting cancer with diabetes, remaining happy and then motivating others to pursue yoga, keep happy, socialize and record all these activities regularly without break for seven years in a blog, is great example of consistency of purpose. In fact I also started a blog few years back, but could not pursue it due to other engagements. I can understand the strength of motivation in you for creating happiness and positivity on this earth. Thanks to this development of digital connectivity, there is no constraint of space and funds, to record our ideas. This provides us unlimited opportunity to vent out our emotions, get motivated for creative activities and lead others into same. Most difficult part of life is old age. It is usually studded with diseases, handicaps and frustration called hell in spiritual language. Your zeal and success in fighting all diseases including diabetes and cancer and leading a happy and interactive life is really praiseworthy. Noting your activities in Bargarh on Facebook is a great success. Congratulations once again on this marvellous innings, keep healthy, fight aloofness and enjoy life. Have a great day.
