2nd Innings of Fighting Cancer as Cancer Survivor

Fighting against Cancer

I had second reconstructive surgery done by Dr. Moni, BDS, MBCHB, FDSRCS, FFDRCS, FRCS, FRCS Ed., Dip AB Director and Surgeon-in-Chief Head and Neck Oncology Surgery at Mazumdar Shaw Cancer Center Narayana Hospitals Bangalore on January 9, 2018 for Osteo Radio Necrosis of Right Mandible and Shortening of Mouth Gap to Less Than ½ Finger as Complications of Post-Surgery Radiation as Cancer Survivor. Surgeon has done an innovative reconstructive surgery to bridge the gap after removing the necrosed bone of Right Mandible by a strap muscle of Neck and cut one fibrosis band on muscular flap covering inner portion of right cheek to widen the Mouth Gap to One Finger. The Naso-gastric Feeding Tube and Suture from the surgical site was removed on January 27, 2018 in OPD Mazumdar Shaw Cancer Center Narayana Hospitals Bangalore. I started taking payasam, organic green tea by mouth same day afternoon. I am struggling initially to swallowing orally and hoping to improve swallowing functions in days to come. Thus my 2nd Innings of Fighting Cancer as Cancer Survivor stared on January 9, 2018 carried forward with physical indisposition caused out of sequels of radical and reconstructive surgeries along with disorder of mouth functions due to heavy dose of radiation therapy.

I had my 1st Innings of Fighting Cancer from May 13, 2015 to January 8, 2018. I had Radical Surgery of Removal of Malignant Tumour of Right Upper Gum Alveolus and Right Maxillary Bone with Reconstructive Surgery on May 13, 2015 done by Dr Vikram,M.B.B.S.,M.S.,M.Ch. HOD Head and Neck Oncology and Reconstructive Surgery at Mazumdar Shaw Cancer Center Narayana Hospitals Bangalore followed by adjuvant radiation therapy over 33 sittings in OPD of Radiotherapy department of Mazumdar Shaw Cancer Center Narayana Hospitals Bangalore completed on August 14, 2015.

I had to gather my mental and spiritual strength to undergo second surgery for complications of Post-Surgery Radiation as Cancer Survivor by positive feedback by readers and comment authors in discussion on my articles relating to my fighting spirit against cancer published in my blog website Yoga and Spirituality from time to time spread over time period from June 2015 to January 2018. My first posting in Facebook on May 21, 2015 on returning Bangalore home after first radical surgery for Cancer was “Back to Pavilion, Not Out! I was diagnosed to having been suffering from Malignant Neoplasm of Right Upper Gum. I was operated for the same on May 13, 2015 & hospitalized up to May 20, 2015. Cancer is so limited…it cannot kill the spirit of life” which was highly appreciated by my friends in Facebook with their good will messages to keep up the spirit of fighting against cancer. My subsequent postings about progress and setback in my health condition as a cancer survivor over a period of more than 2 ½ Years up to the day of second surgery on January 9, 2018 before operation have been flooded with good will messages, wishes and blessings from more than 40,000+ friends and group members of Facebook. I have gathered my emotional and social strength by interacting with my friends in WhatsApp group of Senior Citizens GPR Bangalore, VSS67 MBBS batch mates, PM Academy65 High School Batch about progress and setback in my health condition as a cancer survivor from time to time with good will messages and wishes for sustaining fight against cancer.I have been getting physical and emotional support from my senior citizen forum friends residing in Green Park Regency, Sarjapur Road Bangalore during one to one or group discussion in senior citizens corner meeting for one hour daily in evening about progress and setback in my health condition as a cancer survivor from time to time; more so by their personal visit to our Bangalore home during my intermittent crisis period during convalescence.

To keep up my sense of my generosity and spiritual sense high up during my physical indisposition as a cancer survivor, I am doing on line monthly donation of funds towards Annadhan and Charitable Clinic for devotees, poor & needy persons to Sri Sadguru Sainath Seva Samiti ( SSSSS ) managing Shri Shirdi Sai Baba Anand Ashram, BTM Layout Bangalore. I had provided funds on line for Charity through Subrat, my Facebook friend at Bargarh for distribution of blankets to distressed senior citizens to save them from severe cold in winter season and dresses for primary school poor girl children on New Year Day 2018 at my native district Bargarh Odisha. I have got strong belief that the beneficiaries` Blessing Counts much more for me.

God is my healer. No matter what my body is telling to me, I trust God to heal me. With my supportive family at Bangalore home and countless blessings & good wishes from my relatives, friends and fellow citizens known & unknown and Grace of God, I am quite hopeful to lead a better health in my 2nd Innings of Fighting Cancer as Cancer Survivor.

  1. It is quite heartening to read your full story of marvellous fight against cancer. Please elaborate whether you can chew solid food or not? Are there any significant facial distortions? Complications are part of this fight, but getting back to your social media is a great effort and of course a great mode to enjoy and explore this post surgery complicated life. I have all the praise for your moral, physical and spiritual strength. May God bless you with a long fruitful, pain free, trouble free and pleasant life. Hope the disease and difficulties are not able to dampen your strength. Love to Sara.

    • Thanks Dr Madan Goyal for his good will message of “May God bless you with a long fruitful, pain free, trouble free and pleasant life” on my article ‘2nd Innings of Fighting Cancer as Cancer Survivor’.

      Dear Dr Goyal,

On 3rd day of removal of feeding tube since 29th January 2018, I could take Dosa messed by hand mixed with milk and honey by spoon in mouth as Breakfast and Rice double cooked & messed by hand, Moong Dal semi-liquid preparation, Curd & Pumpkin double boiled messed by hand in Lunch by hand orally and Fruit Juice with Fiber Content in Semi liquid form & Ripe Banana by Chewing as afternoon Snacks in Evening and Semisolid Rice Flakes mixed with Milk & Honey by Spoon as Dinner along with Organic Green Tea Drinks twice daily. Swallowing discomfort still persisting which seems to be slowly improving. I am having sleep at night though there is periodical pain episode over and around the recent surgical site. Facial distortions compared to prior to recent surgery are there but minimal. Structural changes in alignment of jaws are noted with functional changes of swallowing are likely to stabilize in 6 weeks-3 months-6 months. I strongly hope to have better health with mouth functions in days, months & years ahead.

      • Visited Surgeon for checkup at Narayana Hospitals Bangalore on 19th February 2018 on 6th week after surgery. Pain, Swelling, Tenderness with discharging inflammatory fluid outside & inside mouth. Recovery process has been bit complicated due to post radiation lack of immunity which may delay the healing process for another 4-6 weeks. Taking antibiotics & other drugs along with mouth stretching exercise and maintaining cleanliness both inside and outside of recent surgical inflamed site for recovery tough to tolerate till time heals. Next check up by surgeon after 4 weeks. Let us hope the post-operative recovery to be better in days, weeks and months ahead.

    Dear Sir,

You had your last visit to Shree Shirdi Sai Mandir Padampur for Darshan of Shri Sai in your native town Padampur Dist. Bargarh on October 29, 2014 during your last Odisha trip in October-November 2014. Due to your physical indisposition as a cancer survivor, you could not visit your native State Odisha for last 3 Years during 2015, 2016 & 2017. Probably Shirdi Sai Baba wished that you might serve the purpose of helping devotees, poor & needy persons at his abode at your native town Padampur by Donation for Annadan from Bangalore ( on line transfer (t) friend ) which you have started from February 2018 as Monthly Donation.

We highly appreciate your sense of generosity and spirituality during your physical indisposition as a cancer survivor.
