Freedom and Discipline

Freedom and discipline are opposites and complementary. Discipline protects freedom. Freedom without discipline is absolute misery. Discipline without freedom is suffocating.

Being at peace does not guarantee freedom. One who is disciplined is the one who experiences real freedom. Freedom, like peace, is an internal concept; we can experience freedom only when we feel freedom within us. A disciplined man is able to organize his life and achieve balance between freedom and activities in life.

I can say here that I got freedom, from public and professional activities on my retirement from the post of Chief District Medical Officer Bargarh Orissa on February 29, 2008 since more than five years back, which is disciplined by practicing Yoga and Spirituality in my post retirement life.

Freedom and discipline are both internal as well external. Both mental and surrounding legal framework are at play to decide the exact state of mind. Person’s psychological temperament in fact plays very important role also. Person should be financially, socially and mentally free to feel the freedom of mind but unless discipline is well entrenched in brain, person is not able to feel the absolute benefits of freedom. Both state of minds are complimentary and should be enjoyed in balanced way. Appropriate and healthy state of mind is best gift available to people, but many may not be able to enjoy the same because of inappropriate conditioning of brain. Significant percentage of people suffer because of melancholic nature or depression which is internal hindrance to freedom and peace.

    Respected Brother,
    Pranam.

Liberty of action or Personal liberty is called Freedom. But action without discipline is valueless. Hence discipline in life makes a man great.

    Yours Sincerely,
    Umesh

  6. Santhosh says:

    Om Sai Ram Uncle,

Very nicely explained. It all depends on our own self`s decision and reactions in a particular situation. It’s completely ‘Situation’ dependent. In some situations, the mind itself ‘adapts’ as per the current ‘actions’ to be performed at that ‘particular’ moment. But both are very much essential, just needs to be practiced in which ‘situations’ what needs to be used.

    Thank You
    Santhosh KV 🙂

  7. Dr.Binod Bihari Naik says:

    Respected Sir,

As a part of Yoga and Spirituality the topic “Freedom and Discipline ” both have so vast philosophical significance that one can not be able to grasp even if one opens the pages of dictionary. Then question arises to self,”Can it be cleared by Guru, teacher or master”. The answer is still no. Again when one rushes to more deeply, he becomes more puzzled and never touches its philosophical boundary or to be housed within, then imagine where he will stand. Very simple that he is in chain means in bondage when again to take birth, but when he leads disciplined life as per doctrine of life cycle he will be released from bondage so called individual soul has got freedom. In nut-shell when body-mind complex is in discipline with the guide of intellect without clutches of ego the individual soul comes and goes in a noblest way called ‘Freedom’. It’s not subjected to rebirth. It is the birth right of human creation framed by ALMIGHTY. Oh man from the very beginning please try to understand the two words ‘Freedom and Discipline’ otherwise you would be subjected to rebirth again and again, an unending process.

    With thanks
    Your Divine Brother

It is indeed important to understand and acknowledge that freedom and discipline goes hand in hand, and it is integral part of being a responsible person. One cannot have freedom without discipline as it would lead to anarchy. Thanks for bringing this out so clearly.

  9. Purnima Panda says:

    Pranam kaka,

A nice article regarding Freedom and Discipline. Discipline in life is must, because it leads us how to live a better life. However Freedom is a state of mind, whether we are socially, mentally, physically free that is personal. Freedom doesn’t mean that we are free to do anything in life without any restriction, then it’ll be a complete disaster. If Freedom combines with Discipline then definitely one can live life in a better and balanced way.

Thank you for your great thoughts and guidance that enlighten our life.
